  1. Picked up a couple inches here yesterday evening and overnight. Measured 13” - 14” in my normal protected from the wind spot on the flat. I live 10 miles north west of Richmond so that 19” report would “roughly” be 5 miles from me. Is it possible there’s 5” more snow on the ground 5 miles from my house, maybe. I will say I was in Armada 10 times this week which is about 6 miles north west of Richmond and the snow looks about the same everywhere I’ve been this week at about 12”-14”. No matter what we can all agree there is a really deep snow pack right now in South east MI!
  2. Measured up front in the shade and found about the same amount 12-13 inches on the flat no drifting area. Definitely a deep snow pack in SE MI right now. Hopefully we’ll have a slow melt off but something tells me that won’t be the case unfortunately. I really hope I’m wrong though. My sump pumps, yes 2, haven’t kicked on in months, probably since late April early May but I have a feeling that will change in the next month.
  3. I’m in northern St Clair county and I just measured between 12”-13” on the ground in a full sun area with no drifting. I’ll check a different area in the front yard that doesn’t get sun and see what that depth is this afternoon. I’m about 20 miles north east of Niko so can’t speak for his area.
  4. We’re getting heavy snow out here in northern St Clair county off of Huron right now, picked up over 2” in the past 90 minutes. You can see a narrow band coming off the south end of the lake and that’s what’s been hitting us the past hour or so. Pretty intense.
  5. Dang you got a lot more then my area did with this, we got maybe a half inch out here in St Clair county. We did have a few inches on the ground still from the last little disturbance that went through last week so what fell yesterday did fall on top of snow for a change this winter. It’s definitely nice having it look and feel like mid winter for a change.
  6. Nice enjoy all that snow Niko, NWS Detroit is only calling for maybe a inch out my way in the thumb.
  7. Man I couldn’t agree more, just seems day after day week after week month after month we keep hearing about the cold that’s coming but unfortunately it never does. I know the guys saying it here are just saying what the models are telling them honestly and I don’t blame them but at some point you would think they would look at that same model that told them the cold was coming over and over the past few years that never really does and they would ignore it. Even if we get some cold to come down in the lower 48 next month it will be February already, them lights you see at the end of the tunnel is Spring and it’s coming fast! Don’t get me wrong I enjoy reading some of our long range forecasters occasionally that do post here even though they might only be hitting .300 if their lucky but at least their in the game and trying, better then my sorry a**, I wouldn’t have any idea how to read them models or make a long range forecast.
  8. I was thinking the same thing, it definitely went north with the heavier snow in Michigan. Over here in northern St Clair county we’re pushing 4” already and still snowing hard. I’m thinking this could over achieve pretty easily at this rate. NWS was calling for 3-5 so we’ll see.
  9. The cold is coming, the cold is coming! I feel like Charlie Brown falling for that over and over again. It’s looking like another week of boring weather here in lower Michigan.
  10. Thanks for posting this, hits the nail on the head as far as warming winter weather and how it effects the sports that need cold air to survive.
  11. We’ve picked up 4” since 6:30 here in northern lower Michigan, Higgins Lake, crazy because we were only supposed to get 1-2” total. Snowmobiling should be great tomorrow! Happy new year! Check that, up to 5 1/2-6” already since 6:00 ish and still snowing! Awesome overachiever storm!
  12. Woke up to a few fresh inches this morning that fell, not nearly as much as areas south and west of us but northern MI is definitely starting to look like it should this time of year. Made for some great snowmobiling today!
  13. Ended up with 8” or so here at Higgins Lake. Lost pwr for a bit a couple times but we were/are really lucky because it came back on and there are trees down everywhere around here. Made for a really nice evening snowmobile ride. This heavy snow should make a great start to the winter play activities up here like cross country and down hill skiing, snowmobiling, stuff like that.
  14. Woke up this morning to a couple of heavy wet inches already here in northern lower Michigan, trees are already starting to weigh down pretty good unfortunately. Wind is really cranking, really hoping we don’t lose pwr. Sounds like their calling for 6-10 inches here in the “higher” terrain, we’re a little over 1200’ in elevation, but less snow as you get down by the lake shore areas. Planning on getting our first decent snowmobile ride in this evening and tomorrow, this heavy snow makes a great base to build on and help get the trails open.
  15. Thanks Tom for your long range update, actually I only get my longer range thoughts from reading your posts on here the past couple years. Last years longer range forecasts were pretty rough, the cold never showed up like the maps were telling you it seemed. Kind of scary seeing you going with a big warm up and no cold insight for later this month, but, maybe them same maps that showed all that cold that was supposed to be coming last winter that never really showed up and now are showing all this warm air that’s supposedly coming and it to won’t show up. We can only hope they “could” be wrong again and the lower 48 will be flooded with cold and snow in a couple weeks. Please keep up your long range forecasts, again I in joy reading them even if you’re not always 100% with them because let’s be honest, no weather forecaster is always correct!
  16. I know up at our place about 30 miles south of Gaylord we’ve had roughly 6”-7” so far this season, almost all lake effect. We’ve had roughly 1.5” so far down here at home before today’s snow. I’m actually out here in Lapeer county now and there’s probably 1.5”-2” down already today, gonna be surprised if DTX doesn’t end adding Lapeer and maybe Sanilac county to the advisory also.
  17. Flakes are starting to get bigger now out here in northern St Clair county, kinda surprised we got as much snow already as we have considering the flakes have been really tiny so far, probably 1/2” or so already.
  18. Welcome to the board but more importantly welcome to Michigan! Looking forward to your thoughts on your first Michigan winter. I split my time between our house which is about 20 miles due west of Port Huron in the “thumb” and our cabin which is about 30 miles due south of Gaylord in northern lower Michigan. You’re going to hear lots of explanations of how our state is described by like the UP and up north and the thumb and snow belts, lots more but any questions ask away, again welcome!
