  1. News Flash!!! The sun came out thirty minutes ago and it's partly sunny. We'll see if it lasts.
  2. Maybe I will get some benefit from having the power off for 2.5 days.
  3. No I don't have a well. I am on city water which is also expensive since Sandy has been redoing all its infrastructure. In September they had a $50 rate increase. A well must be very expensive to operate then. You can't win that's for sure. Maybe with solar but I am not sure about that in Oregon. I haven't seen a sunny day for a long, long time.
  4. I would be ticked if I had to pay for a permit on a fallen tree. I love our trees and I hate to see them come down. The tree that took out my power was about 60-70 years old, really sad, but it was healthy, no rot. I guess it just fell because the wind hit it the wrong way. So many trees have been lost. Not as many here. Trees near the gorge are really resilient and rarely fall but areas away from the gorge that only get occasional wind such as Lake Oswego, SW Portland or Milwaukie have a lot more tree damage.
  5. You have a big electric bill Andrew. Mine was $150 and I have a 3K sf house although I have equal pay, the increase will probably show up at the end of the utility cycle hopefully it won't be too much more. I hate to see the snow pack melt, although it is cloud today so maybe it won't melt as much as when it is raining.
  6. Cliff Mass thinks that warm raindrops hitting the ground can warm up the air around it and warm the current temperature. Do I have that right? So In Portland when we have ice storms such as in 2004 for instance. when my thermometer was stuck on 17 degrees for five days.I was just seeing things. I think he needs to spend some time in and near the gorge when we have an ice storm. It always takes an extra two or three days to come out of a ice storm, first Portland, warms, then the mouth of the gorge and finally in the gorge. It's a slow process.
  7. Temperature near freezing for the first time since all this began. Pretty minor ice storm but even a small amount of ice can be a problem.
  8. This has been an impactful series of days. We have had many trees come down but not like Eugene/Springfield area. Ice does so much damage. The tree that took out our power must have been 60-70 years old. What a waste. I haven't gone on the trail behind my house because it is too dangerous, but I am sure a lot of trees came down. Losing power at the height of the storm was miserable, I have never been so cold. Snow is beautiful but ice is truly hellish, I hate ice but it is reality here near the mouth of the gorge.
  9. Not looking forward to all the ice coming my way. I just hope the power stays on, don't want to go through that again any time soon. My grandsons were having video games withdrawl, it was ugly.
  10. It's been my experience that people here really pay little attention to what happens in the east particularly their weather. Concerning the storm tomorrow, I have seen the cold transition without an ice storm maybe 5% of the time here. The winds are ripping here and will only increase tomorrow. The ground is frozen, it's not going to moderate any other way unless of course the tooth fairy comes and waves her magic wand.
  11. It has been very cold here in Sandy. It got down to 12 here during the storm, maybe colder later but I am not sure. We lost power for two days. It was very cold in the house, probably in the law forties. We have a gas stove but it wasn't us to the challenge. I finally broke down and got a small generator which is probably a good idea since we live near all these trees. It was a massive tree that took out the power. Sunny here today but strong winds. I am not looking forward to this ice storm. I probably will lose power again.
  12. I have to say these winds are something fierce. Very strong even here in Sandy. I can't imagine how they would be in Troutdale or the Gorge. Very powerful storm. We will be lucky to keep our power, already briefly went out.
  13. I know we haven't had a storm like this since 2014 but I have had this happen a number of times while I lived in Troutdale and Gresham. It is colder than some of those but most of the times it was around 20. Not has much in recent years I admit but look up the history of the east Portland areas and you will see many storms like this. I remember a teacher telling me years ago that in 1978 there were drifts up to the top of Troutdale Elementary which is a two story building. InJanuary of 1980 there was 3-4 feet of snow. I guess i should have said that this storm is typical of storms that happened here in the past but not recently.
  14. This storm is very typical of the kinds of storms we can get east of Portland. In the 35+ years I have been here, I have seen this many times. In 89-90 we had two storms like this. The gorge is a monster and definitely makes its own weather. 84 will be closed, trucks will be piled up at the truck stops there, the new people will be reporting from Sylvan and Troutdale, and cars will be spun out everywhere. Never changes except when you add in ice which is a lot less fun.
  15. Ken you live across the street from my daughter's in-laws. She said that they their pipes were frozen. I know they were doing some digging there. I hope they filled in the hole. Do you still have water?
  16. Also starting to lightly snow here. The wind woke me up. I have large trees near the house, we cut back the branches but obviously missed some. It's 17 degrees. Had light snow last night that's blowing around now.
  17. If Portland area gets sleet, I just want it gone. I would rather it warm up than have that slop. This whole thing has been so disappointing. It changes from one minute to the next you don't know what to believe. Ice always seems to be Portland's default any more. There isn't even much snow today, just tiny little flakes. Onto spring as far as I am concerned.
  18. I have never seen the models fluctuate so much. One minute we have snow, oh wait that's ice, We have snow then it's gone. I could see a fews days before but not as it's occurring. I understand that things are in flux but this is ridiculous.
  19. The TV stations are being extremely wishy-washy. How are people supposed to know and plan for the weather when they won't give any useful information. At one point the screen showing the weather was blank. We need a better way to track weather conditions besides what's available.
  20. Thanks for the info about the ice. I would think it would be ice if it was transitioning. I have seen that many times. It has started snowing here in Sandy, temperature dropped from 38 to 34 in the last few minutes. Surprising.
  21. I still do not understand why we would get ice. The storm is far south of us, arctic air will be south of us, the gorge will be raging, it makes no sense. I have have lived east of Portland for almost 40 years and this is not playing by any rules that I know. Freezing rain generally happens when a warm system is coming over us and the ground is frozen or a storm is north of us. Please someone explain this.
  22. Well something must be going to happen, the schools here in Sandy closed for tomorrow. Although the district does go up to Timberline. Glad to see the Washingtonians getting so much snow. The pictures are beautiful. The best snow is when it's a surprise.
