Question? I know in the Puget Sound since it has elevations near sea level areas higher up by even 100 ft get more snow. How prevalent is that say in the Willamette Valley? My parents house consistently gets more snow than the rest of Corvallis because they are a hundred feet above most of town. Obviously I know more elevation means more snow but I didn’t really realize that even 100 ft makes quite the difference. Is that common in other parts of the valley as well?

January Weather In The PNW 2024 (Part III) - The Warming Shot
icyasf replied to iFred's topic in West of the Rockies
Looks like the cold air never really left. We are barely above freezing right now, with lots still on the roads, trees cracking, and the power being out . There also looks like there is way more ice on things than when I last checked so it seems like a lot of the rain that was supposed to fall as normal rain ended up falling as freezing rain because we were below freezing much of the night. -

Well this event was a fun ride, and the first one I actually was on here for!! I’m a freshman at OSU so I live in the dorms but I stayed home for the weekend at my parents place cause they are a little bit out of town and have a weather station and a bit of elevation compared to campus. We ended with a 30/19 day Saturday, 25/18 Sunday, 29/19 Monday, and a low of 16 today. Didn’t get snow but the sleet and ZR combo was pretty interesting. Hoping we thaw out of this, and people that lost power get it back quick. Currently 28 with half an inch of ice on top of sleet.- 6999 replies

There is also puddles in Corvallis. I cannot tell if this means it’s starting to melt or if this is a bad thing. -

Can sleet cover cool temperatures down the same way snow cover can? -

Basically just feels like walking on compact snow, so I am not complaining about this sleet. Would rather have this over ZR. -

It’s come to a time where I am just ignoring the models and looking out my window LOL. Don’t know why but I just have a feeling Corvallis will at least see some flakes from this before switching to ZR. -

Lock it in!!! Would be nice if Eugene could also get in on some action so it could be valley wide, but at least we will all potentially see some sub freezing highs. -

Trying so hard to not jinx it, but I think Corvallis-Portland is looking like the best spot to be right now. Hoping it stays that way and also hoping the arctic front can bring washingtonians some snow -

I really don’t want to jinx it, but I don’t think it is a far stretch to say that Corvallis might see some action if we are lucky and this thing trends just a few miles south -

Lol it’s truly region wide except for Corvallis and Eugene A win is win though it’s still a majority of the region and I am excited to see snow pics -

Does anyone have any predictions for the South Valley lol? Very happy for everyone that’s gonna see snow, and still keeping my fingers crossed down here -

LOL, I am 18. I got put onto a weather craze because my dad has always been a weather fanatic and has had a weather station up and running for a long time. I am not well educated on anything weather wise but love seeing all the valuable input you guys put in, and love rooting for snow! -
I truly don’t get why some people think the South valley is awful. Obviously it gets a bit too hot in summer, but sadly most places west of the cascades are like that now. We also don’t do awful in the snow department, or getting freezes. We have gotten snow every year since 2016 (atleast in Corvallis). I also realize people have preferences though, so this is just my opinion.

Looks like we are gonna have another sub 40 high here, only got up to 37. I know a lot of people don’t like the weather of the south valley but I do really like when we get inversions.
