  1. Just had a flash of lightning and thunder here with sleet. The sky is really strange looking right now.
  2. First flakes of the season here in St. Paul today. It came down pretty heavy for 5-10 minutes this morning. .2” officially at the airport.
  3. What a difference a few miles can make! We just had some very light pixie dust here. Zero accumulation.
  4. I think your prediction of 4.5” is going to end up being pretty spot on. Light freezing drizzle outside at the moment. MSP says we might get an inch or two overnight. I think that may be optimistic by the looks of the radar.
  5. The entire state of MN is under a winter storm watch. I can’t remember the last time I saw that.
  6. I feel for ya! Ice dams can be no joke and can cause some serious damage. If you have some salt and some pantyhose, you can fill them up with the salt and place them on the roof perpendicular to the roof line to create channels for the water to drain. Just be careful! Good luck!
  7. No kidding! I couldn’t make it to the end of my street with a 4x4 truck. I had to put it in reverse to get back to my driveway because I was unable to turn around without sliding into the curb. St. Paul side streets are still rutted from the earlier snows. Now with the glaze of ice on them they are rutted ice rinks. Any incline will result in your vehicle sliding sideways. It’s really unbelievable. I’ve never seen it this bad. I’m hoping for warm temps and rain at this point.
  8. Might get another 1/2” by morning by the looks of the radar if we are lucky. I can’t complain. It’s nice to have snow on the ground this early in the season.
  9. There were two separate groups fishing (in a boat) on White Bear Lake this afternoon when I drove by! The crappy cell phone pic doesn’t quite pick them up, but it looked nasty out there!
  10. Roads got pretty slick very quickly with the 1/2” of snow we got today. I saw the first ice fishermen of the year today on the small (83 acre) lake near my house. I sure wouldn’t trust that ice yet!
  11. Just had a quick burst of light snow move through St. Paul. I’m not a huge college football fan, but I may watch the Gopher game tomorrow night just to see how the weather factors in to the game.
  12. 27f or so sounds about right. It stayed clear the entire night. We were south of Ely, and east of Babbitt in the middle of nowhere.
  13. I spent the weekend at a cabin in northern Minnesota a bit south of Ely. I don’t know what it got down to officially Friday night, but it was definitely a pretty hard freeze. Saturday was cool, but very pleasant. Made for some great photo ops. Leaves are about a week away from peak I believe.
  14. Accidentally left some windows open overnight. Brrrr! Cold and damp this morning. I could see my breath in my living room. Ended up turning the furnace on for 10 minutes to take the chill out of the air.
  15. Thanks for digging that up! I love these kind of useless facts!
  16. Any idea what the record is for either of these is? Just curious.
  17. For those without Instagram, here is a photo of the remnant snow piles at MSP international airport. July 19th, 2019.
  18. Dew point jumped up to 81f from 79 in my zip in the past hour. Currently 80 at msp. I think this heatwave might spell the end of the the remnant snow piles at MSP. It’s Incredible that they are still there. https://www.instagram.com/p/B0Ek7SGnmsR/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_mid=XTIwTAAAAAGefWFiYLz8dsTpx-mV
  19. What is the record? I’m drenching sweat from just standing outside watering the garden... and it usually takes quite a bit to get me sweating.
  20. Pretty non-eventful storm season in these parts so far this year, but this one was the biggest of the season, at least for me. 1.25” of rain in less than an hour and some gusty winds. The best part was the awesome sunset afterwards when the storm passed along with some mammatus clouds.
  21. June is two weeks away and I still have my heat on. It’s downright raw out there. Tomorrow looks even worse. I wouldn’t mind seeing a couple flakes just so I can say it happened this late in the year, but I’m definitely ready for some warmer weather after this. In a month the days start getting shorter and some of my north facing hostas are only a few inches tall.
  22. The wind has eased here significantly today. It did do a great job of clearing my trees of their small to medium sized dead branches. Bon Fire season is a few weeks away and I will have plenty of kindling.
  23. MSP also cracked the top 10 snowiest Aprils. Eau Claire has set a new all-time winter snowfall total with 91.3”Pretty impressive when you consider how little snow we had right through January.
  24. I saw multiple very large branches knocked down in my travels around town today and even one large 50’ spruce(?) that was completely uprooted. It is very odd seeing an uprooted tree covered in snow.
