  1. Roads got pretty slick very quickly with the 1/2” of snow we got today. I saw the first ice fishermen of the year today on the small (83 acre) lake near my house. I sure wouldn’t trust that ice yet!
  2. Just had a quick burst of light snow move through St. Paul. I’m not a huge college football fan, but I may watch the Gopher game tomorrow night just to see how the weather factors in to the game.
  3. 27f or so sounds about right. It stayed clear the entire night. We were south of Ely, and east of Babbitt in the middle of nowhere.
  4. I spent the weekend at a cabin in northern Minnesota a bit south of Ely. I don’t know what it got down to officially Friday night, but it was definitely a pretty hard freeze. Saturday was cool, but very pleasant. Made for some great photo ops. Leaves are about a week away from peak I believe.
  5. Accidentally left some windows open overnight. Brrrr! Cold and damp this morning. I could see my breath in my living room. Ended up turning the furnace on for 10 minutes to take the chill out of the air.
  6. Thanks for digging that up! I love these kind of useless facts!
  7. Any idea what the record is for either of these is? Just curious.
  8. For those without Instagram, here is a photo of the remnant snow piles at MSP international airport. July 19th, 2019.
  9. Dew point jumped up to 81f from 79 in my zip in the past hour. Currently 80 at msp. I think this heatwave might spell the end of the the remnant snow piles at MSP. It’s Incredible that they are still there. https://www.instagram.com/p/B0Ek7SGnmsR/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_mid=XTIwTAAAAAGefWFiYLz8dsTpx-mV
  10. What is the record? I’m drenching sweat from just standing outside watering the garden... and it usually takes quite a bit to get me sweating.
  11. Pretty non-eventful storm season in these parts so far this year, but this one was the biggest of the season, at least for me. 1.25” of rain in less than an hour and some gusty winds. The best part was the awesome sunset afterwards when the storm passed along with some mammatus clouds.
  12. June is two weeks away and I still have my heat on. It’s downright raw out there. Tomorrow looks even worse. I wouldn’t mind seeing a couple flakes just so I can say it happened this late in the year, but I’m definitely ready for some warmer weather after this. In a month the days start getting shorter and some of my north facing hostas are only a few inches tall.
  13. The wind has eased here significantly today. It did do a great job of clearing my trees of their small to medium sized dead branches. Bon Fire season is a few weeks away and I will have plenty of kindling.
  14. MSP also cracked the top 10 snowiest Aprils. Eau Claire has set a new all-time winter snowfall total with 91.3”Pretty impressive when you consider how little snow we had right through January.
  15. I saw multiple very large branches knocked down in my travels around town today and even one large 50’ spruce(?) that was completely uprooted. It is very odd seeing an uprooted tree covered in snow.
  16. I was wondering why the snow was dirty looking! Crazy!
  17. There’s some pretty crazy video coming out from the aftermath of the blizzard. This is in South Dakota. https://www.keloland.com/weather/video-highlights-challenges-ranchers-face-following-blizzard/1851313383
  18. I’m dry so far. Except for the garage. A build up of ice/snow on the driveway apron was causing water to build up next to the garage door and leak inside . Chipped some ice away this afternoon so hopefully that resolves the issue. Good luck with the water in the basement. I have a feeling I’m going to be dealing with that in the next few days. The side roads and sidewalks of St. Paul are an absolute disaster right now. HUGE icy ruts which are being polished to a slippery shine by a combination of the light rain, and traffic driving over them. Lots of ponding water already. The main roads, while not as icy, have some ginormous potholes showing up. I’ve never seen the potholes this bad, this early in the season. Many of them are unavoidable due to the snowbank-narrowed roads. The next couple of days will be interesting.
  19. Went from all rain to all snow in about 15 minutes.
  20. 37 now. Some sleet beginning to mix in at times but it’s still mostly rain.
  21. Up to 38 degrees in the backyard. Light rain at the moment.
  22. NWS is backing off snow totals for my area. Point only has 1-3 tomorrow and 3-5 tomorrow night. “Significant amount of sleet” is mentioned in the afternoon discussion. A 1-2 degree difference could mean a large amount of snow or a snowy/sleety/rainy mess. Looks like it’s going to be a nowcast. Either way, next week is going to be BAD with flooding. Even today, with sunshine and slightly above freezing temps caused some flooding on some of the side roads today. The sewer grates are completely buried. I might try to shovel some channels in my yard to try and direct the water away from my house in preparation for next Wednesday.
  23. That is one intense band! And It looks to be intensifying as it just sits there.
  24. Our already narrow street is seemingly shrinking by the day. I don't know where the plows would put another 4-9". I think Minneapolis/St. Paul will be implementing some parking restrictions here after this next round, if not sooner. It's been quite some time since I remember them doing that.
  25. There are some seriously large ice dams forming around town here...Easily 6-8”+. Some of them have icicles hanging from them that reach the ground. I anticipate there will be quite a bit of damage caused by them in the coming weeks. Here’s a pic from my neighbors. This isn’t even close to the biggest one I saw either.
