Holding on to near 60F so far w mostly cloudy skies. Clouds rolled on in rather quickly, so not as much sunshine as predicted. Much BN for this time of the year. Definitely jacket weather today.

Note: Hurricane Lee looks like will affect Atlantic Canada and parts of NNE and even Cape Cod w some powerful winds and very hvy rain. This being said, dangerous rip currents and very high surf, even beach erosion can be expected from the Carolina's all the way up to Maine coastline. Looks like the trough will help push Lee further out to sea, instead of bringing it further west and affecting some of the big cities on the EC. Further north though, some may not be so lucky.

Thankfully it doesn't look as strong as Fiona (2022) or Dorian (2019) which I both experienced here. Looks like a good storm for minimal damage, although the power might still go out here. :)

It might have been this one:
    https://www.theweathernetwork.com/en/news/weather/severe/this-day-in-weather-history-january-17-2020-st-johns-nl-blizzard

But that's east of you. Either way, I'll be interested to see how you do you there this year! I don't know anybody else in that part of the world.

Oh yeah I remember that St John's storm. Absolutely nuts.

All forecasts I've seen for New England/Atlantic Canada is snowier than normal and average temps.

  3. Not right in the town, but fairly close.

Weather is interesting for sure. It's usually windy any time of year, lots of snow in general, usually pleasant temps in summer but June 1st was very hot in the region this year. It reached 30-33C on the island on that day. A day or two later, and it was 6C at 2pm with rain all day.

    Fiona was unpleasant last year.

Life in general...it's very quiet and relaxed. Maybe too quiet.

this was an el nino year I suspect the La Nina base signal argues for more in the west. But that strat warm means to me we got alot of winter coming and I am talking beyond what we are seeing week 2 and 3. I am worried about another MJO rotation into the warmer phases for a time and have outlined that. But I do believe there is alot of potential centered from the Rockies to the Appalachians but influencing west and east of that, right into April this year

Hopefully it will finally get cold and snowy here. We've had a decent amount of snow but it keeps getting washed away by rain.

December 2013 was better in the South Valley up to about Albany. 7" of snow going into the cold snap with a 19/-10 day at Eugene! Here it was mostly dry with a dusting of snow.

February 2014 was absolutely amazing though. 2/6 the snow started, with about 6" of snow starting in the middle of the day with very strong east winds. Then another storm on the 7th and a final one with some snow/ice on the 8th, totalling about 9-10" of snow. I think places around Corvallis had over 18" of snow in those three days. And we had a high of 22 on the 6th which is very impressive for that late!

I was lucky enough to be in Eugene for that winter (after a previous major dud of a winter in 2012-13). Besides December 2008, it is my best winter memory in Oregon.

I've thought about Western MT also.  Central WA North of Ellensburg would be fine also, as long as it's in the treed areas.  Why not Missoula?

I was in Missoula in August once (2014) and it was hot as hell.

Past few summers have been very hot in the region. Cranbrook, BC had an average high of 91.4F last July 2021. Missoula averaged 94.1F that month, for a high. This year, 91.9F in Missoula. Too hot there! That's one of the reasons I live way out on this remote island.

April is really the only month that I dislike here with the snow melting and everything still completely dead and dormant. By mid May things really start to green up with plentiful rain/snow and the anticipation of Spring is on the horizon.

The cold has never really bothered me...unless it's below zero!

Below zero (F) is the best kind of cold though!

If I lived in the US again, it would probably be somewhere in western MT (except not Missoula/Butte).

I met a few of the regulars on here (like Jesse) years ago at the Omsi winter meet up. Obviously I live too far away at this point but I would love to meet some more of you if the opportunity presents itself. I'll still be in Phoenix for a few more months before going east.

    How far east you going?
