  1. Zoomed in CDN snow accum model for you all, the other ones are a bit harder to read from distance.
  2. Sorry for those who couldn't see the latest GEM snowfall. This might work for everyone.
  3. And...just for kicks...GEM throws this stronger surface low approaching the coast for late Sunday night....tough to tell where R/S line is.
  4. Hi all, I'm trying something a bit different on my blog today, and doing live updates throughout the day as needed. I think at least today's storm will have more of an impact north of the border, but tracks/intensity can change. Live Updates: http://50shadesofvan.com/blog/2014/2/15/saturday-west-coast-wind-storm-live-updates
  5. Latest Post: http://50shadesofvan.com/blog/2014/2/11/welcome-back-winter Scott Sistek's latest post is interesting as well, as he counts about 10 Pacific Storms that will influence our weather the next 16 days.
  6. Pretty epic snow event down in PDX and area by the sounds of it! Enjoy it while you can, everyone. Up in Canada, I just issued a Hydrometer Alert for the City of Vancouver. http://50shadesofvan.com/blog/2014/2/7/hydrometeor-alert-for-the-city-of-vancouver
  7. Latest post for discussing snow chances for us in the north: http://50shadesofvan.com/blog/2014/2/5/will-it-snow-this-weekend EDIT: Maybe should have waited for the 18Z to come out...
  8. Fair enough, but I still feel PDX will have a low between 9-12 Thursday night. We'll see though.
  9. SREF's are very aggressive in the temperature department, in case you want to have a look. A couple single digit LOWS possible for PDX. Maybe squeak out a 9? EDIT: lows. Definitely, Definitely lows. Portland ≠ Mars
  10. Latest Post: Some Call It The Greatest Thing That Ever Happened. I Call It Winter (Sorry for the Upworthy Style title!) Highlights: -Mega mountain snows -Much needed snows for the ski season -Localized strait-effect snow for Vancouver Island tomorrow?
  12. Great to have another fellow Canadian aboard the forums. I feel there's some very real potential for snow squalls for east Vancouver Island tomorrow. We'll see, but conditions do seem pretty ripe for an event like this.
  13. Just appreciate how far the -10 850 isotherm goes out into the Pacific. Pretty historic for February. 12Z WRF model should be pretty chilly.
  14. Nothing to see here, nothing to see... EDIT: Cold snap broke WeatherBell. Domain min: -61.4?
  15. My first official post on the cold snap: http://50shadesofvan.com/blog/2014/2/1/cold-air-crisis Dug up a little bit of info on Feb. 89, and made a brief comparison as well. Looks like 89 had tighter pressure gradients, stronger outflow, a deeper high pressure over Yukon, plus better cross-polar flow.
  16. This topic has already gotten over 5000 views though today. Not too shabby. 18Z runs don't have the most up to date information from radiosonde (weather balloons), for those wondering why the 6Z and 18Z runs often get bashed a lot of the time. Oh and I wrote about groundhogs, and now I'm trying to throw something together comparing this event to Feb. 1989. We'll see.
  17. Our favourite model (the NAM obviously) has 1000-500mb thickness down to 516 for Vancouver BC by Monday evening. Flurries on the coast possible Sunday/Monday EDIT: If some cities get even an inch of snow cover before the brunt of the 'cold crisis' this very well could be a colder, more sustained event for several cities when compared to December's memorable event. Time to start blogging. ay
  18. Your initial Opening Ceremony Olympic forecast for February 7th: Sochi +7C Vancouver: -7C LOL. A little ironic, don't you think...
  19. For reference, I believe this is as cold as the WRF got us in December. If this verifies records will be falling like dominos. Coldest February Arctic outbreak since at least 1990 for the Vancouver, BC area.
  20. NAEFS has 5 days sub freezing for Portland. 5...
  21. Yeah, I can probably make it happen...
  22. I have medium to high confidence Mt. Washington will re-open by mid-month as well: http://50shadesofvan.com/blog/2014/1/30/a-toast-to-a-fresh-month Heck, next month is looking a whole lot more dynamic, and interesting when compared to the past two tranquil weeks.
