This "winter" so far has been incredibly dismal. Has 1980-81 or 2004-05 vibes. Guess we were due for a dud. With that said, there were fire weather watches issued by Great Falls NWS as recent as December 2020.

Yeah when you’re looking strictly at air masses the 1990 event (I’d argue 1968 as well) stands out no doubt. There were a lot of low level players in June 2021. As for a straight two day anomaly standpoint though, the data doesn’t lie, it sticks out above the rest.

I think he's more referencing the actual anomaly not duration. June 2021 had back to back days of 25+ degree (+29 on the 28th) anomalies where December 1990 never saw a 25 degree anomaly on any day.

12z Euro isn't great. Everything is back to shifting east.

From my view, our "window" this year is from Thanksgiving through the end of December then torch thereafter.

The trend does seem to be that the first shot slides east but the NPAC high repositions into the sweet spot by day 10-11. Then the arctic air hammer drops Thanksgiving weekend.
