March 2022 Observations and Discussions

Our High School track team just left for a noon track meet in Hastings today.  40 degrees with cloudy skies, occasional showers, and winds gusting to 30 MPH as of 9:30 AM.  I knew there was a reason that I don't coach a spring sport.   Maybe temps make it to the low 50's later this afternoon, who knows.  Not a fun weather day for coaches, athletes, workers or fans.

The extended forecast is looking pretty ugly.  Last night's Euro had all 30s and 40s for the next ten days.

The 00z Euro did pull a narrow wedge of 80s up into southeast Nebraska next Tuesday, ahead of the big storm.

The sun has emerged!  What a wonderful sight to see after this dreadful stretch of wx.  I will say, the soaking rains have greened up the grass around here.  I’m not looking forward to the cold and blustery weekend.  Prob a good day to make some soup tomorrow morning.

Lucky you! Another day socked-in with o'cast and 37F windchill

Models are trending toward a more phased system next week.  The more progressive models had been sweeping the northern stream wave through the region and leaving energy behind in the southwest.  Now they are trending toward the northern wave diving south through the northern plains and all the southern energy ejecting northeast into our region.

@AndieThis got even better, not in the Bullseye anymore, but still, 1 to 1.5 inches of QPF is really nice, if this keeps trending like this, then the Drought Feedback loop would die off!

All models now agree next week.  The northern and southern waves will phase into a large, powerful great lakes storm.

That surely looks like signs of Spring....my daffodils just started coming up and I'm afraid they will get zapped by the Freeze coming this weekend.  What about your area?  Are temps supposed to dip pretty low?

We had some interesting wx late afternoon yesterday and noticed a Severe Thunderstorm warning was issued for our W/SW burbs as a very strong squall popped up and produced 70+mph winds.  I don't think I've ever seen this before from a non-lightning producing storm cell and one that produced snow/graupel.

The "GL's Glacier" has held together through the ups/downs this month and looking ahead it is positioned quite well to hold on through the end of this month.  I would not be surprised to see places up there to still have snow OTG into mid April.

The official high at Grand Rapids yesterday was 46. Yesterdays rain changed to snow late last night and officially at GRR a reported 0.2" fell so now for the season Grand Rapids is now at 70.1" The official overnight low at GRR was 30 and that is the current temperature. Here in MBY after midnight there was at least a half inch of snow fall and of that around 0.2" in now on the ground mostly on the grass and roof tops. This next week looks to have some big ups and downs with a cold start a big warm up and then another cool down rather typical for late March and the start of April.

You both nailed it. That drought region is in retrograde which is fantastic. I don't want us all to go through drought.

I’m hoping it retreats for good. Central US agriculture needs a good year.  With Ukraine on its heels ag-wise food will spike even with a good harvest.
C’mon rain!

Historic day here for me. This morning's stat-padding 1/2" of snow bumped my total to 33.9" and I am no longer in the hunt for least snowfall season of my life. Have squeaked past '82-83's dismal performance. Both have been equally forgettable, but I was really hoping to add hard numbers to back-up my rants at getting low-balled on every event.

#1 shall remain the Mega-Nino of '82-83

I think it’ll help the US but not outside the country.  Fuel and fertilizer costs will still be a hinder to the cost of food for our country.  I sure as heck hope our bread basket region does well.  Signs do point that it will so I’m encouraged by these trends.

Hello from the Detroit area. In your neighborhood @Nikoand @jaster220! I'm on tour with my band. Been mainly cloudy and chilly with some rain and some snow showers so far. Heading off to Ohio today. Isn't looking great there either. I return home Apri 4th. Hopefully more spring like weather by then!

Awesome. Hope you enjoy your stay here at the Detroit Metro Area. Today you even got to experience some snow this morning, how about that. Here in Macomb, I received about 0.5" and was looking more like Winter than Spring.

Anyways, safe travels back home!

Going back in time, I did some browsing and found this:

Detroit's latest snowfall in recorded history is May 22nd, 1882, where 0.1" of snow fell or more, also on May 22nd, 1883, an inch or more fell ( how crazy is that for that to have occurred a year later and on the same date) and finally on May 9th, 1923, where 3" or more fell.

Possibly down into the mid-20s, but unlikely to go much lower given the downsloping component here, east of the mountains. Deepens the mixing layer and causes compressional heating.

BTW, daffodils are pretty hardy. Ours were 3-4” tall when the last snowstorm hit. Temps dropped into the teens. Daffodils brushed it off like it was nothing.

This clipper is pretty vicious. Just had a snow/shower and a 54mph gust. Full sunshine in between squalls.

Interesting year.

Even more amazing is that on that May 9th 1923 that snow fell during the daytime. So that must have been some heavy snow fall. Here are some reported totals from that snow storm. Detroit 6", Flint 12.0" Lansing 11.5" Saginaw 9.0" Grand Rapids 5.5", Muskegon 5" Toledo 4" Even Milwaukee 1.5" and Chicago 0.5" got in on the event.

Today has been a rare average March day with temps in the 50s.

Through the first 25 days of March, Kansas City is 1.2 degrees above normal but how we got here has been anything but normal. 19 of the 25 days has been at least 7 degrees above or below normal. And 13 have been over 12 degrees above or below normal
