Made it to CDA! First leg down. Took down the station yesterday so my PNW records have officially ended. I waited as long as I could. Some final stats:

Rain for the event (through yesterday): 5.62

Rain for the year so far: 16.1

February average temp: 40.6

February high: 64 on 2/13

February low: 19 on 2/25

Next time the station comes back online it will be starting a whole new round of record-keeping. Stoked!

So exciting!! Safe travels!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Awesome!

When do you arrive in Sioux Falls?     The upcoming pattern seems to ripe with potential for the Midwest.

GFS sure sucks today. Meanwhile it's raining, over 2" on the 28th, 1.3" yesterday, almost an inch today. No big deal.

It is really impressive, I *may or may not* have about 800 hours in the sim....🙄  If only I could count that towards real flight hours....

The detail is good enough I can fly the areas I have lived/grown up in per the common moniker of VFR (visually follow roads).  Following Mt Baker Hwy up to the ski area can be a little tricky if I'm not using my head tracking set up.  The hard part is keeping an eye on the road while avoiding "cumulo-granite clouds" as you get up close to the ski area.  With head tracking its a piece of cake.

I have tried the google map plug in, but I haven't quite decided which one I like better, it seems to depend on the area.

There is a freeware Airbus H145 (helicopter) that is a lot of fun, and it makes it a lot easier to get in and check things out since you can hover or slowly pivot around the object of interest.

Unfortunately I don't think I can download the H145, cause the game is streaming through the cloud and I can't access the game files. Only "mods" I can download are in the marketplace

KEUG making up ground on the water year deficit.   Should be less than 2 inches below average by tomorrow.     A decent chance of ending up with a normal rainy season there with the upcoming wet pattern.   Climo is pretty good.

I know I come off as some sort of rain maniac, but all I really want is climo. Old school, pre-1980 climo. That means around 44" of rain a year, and summer average temperatures in the 81/52 range. The last decade has averaged around 10" less rain and 4ºF warmer.

0.89" today and 1.50" for the storm, and I'm feeling less stressed. Don't know why I take heat and drought so personally, but it's been that way ever since I was old enough to be aware of the weather.

Wow, I didn't realize Eugene averaged so much rainfall every year. That's almost 8" more than here. I had no idea it was the wettest major city (pop over 100,000) on the I-5 corridor!

I would like to see old fashioned winters return to all of California as well! I am not happy with this new pattern we have gotten locked into that started around the 2011-12 season!

I hope so, too! The entire state really needs the rain and snow right now. It has been bone-dry across most of the state since the end of December. I also am aware that parts of the PNW have been rather dry as well, especially Oregon.

Looks like the 1991-20 average is 39.6". Something might be weird with the data though as there has been some moving around of the rainfall measurements from what I've heard, which were previously in a wetter microclimate but were moved to a drier one.

Apparently Eugene got more precipitation than Hillsboro in 2019 and 2020.

Out in packwood working today and there was lots of water along Highway 12 on the way in. Was snow on the ground here still when I was out here in mid February…but none now. Doesn’t even look like there’s a lot on the peaks surrounding town. Would be nice to be cool and wet not warm and wet coming up.

I used to have a cabin in packwood...love that town. Really miss Peter's Inn though :(

Fern Ridge Dam just west of Eugene averages 41.18 inches per year.

2019 - 42.16

2020 - 42.01

2021 - 40.69

That is very close to normal over the last 3 years.   I think there might be something wrong with the KEUG averages and I remember that being discussed on here a couple times in years past.

Since it's spring now, I'll go ahead and grade out the winter. C+. That sounds harsh since Eugene received over 10 inches of snow which is about twice the annual average. The main reasoning is that the mountains got completely hosed. It was such a great start to the winter, but it ended right around Jan 1st. I love venturing out in the mountains (snowmobiling), but the conditions have been total sh!t since then. I'm tired of just storing my sled in the garage.

I would guess the Fern Ridge average is more in like with what KEUG actually averages. That higher number quoted often is likely representative of downtown.

I'd give it a B-. Great event in late December and last week was nice. Last week probably bumped us up from a C. Kind of a boring winter overall. Hopefully we can have a cool damp spring and hold on to the snowpack as long as possible. I think next winter may be decent. Neutral perhaps?

Fern Ridge Dam also recorded 53.51 inches in 2016 and 59.19 inches in 2017... and then only 38.30 inches in 2018.

2016 and 2017 were actually quite wet down there.    I don't see a decade of dry years at that station.    Most of the years have been at or above normal in the last decade.

From 2014 through 2021... the Fern Ridge station averaged 46.11 inches compared to a long term average of 41.18 inches.

2016-17 was a very wet water year. I prefer to look at the water year. You can see the stats for my location in my signature. Our average is 75". So you can see we have had some very dry years. 2020-21 came in near normal, right now we are running near normal for this water year, once I update my signature, we'll be at about 55". It has been notably dry down here, but probably the bigger story is how dry it has been late April-June. Kind of sets the stage for these bad fire seasons. Last DJF were actually well above average here for precip, but then we followed it with a record dry spring. :(

All that being said we have had 4 drier than average water years in a row. And 7 of the last 8 have been drier than normal.

The March - May period was drier than normal at the Fern Ridge station in 2015, 2018, 2020, and 2021 (only slightly below normal in 2018 and 2020).

Spring was very wet in 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2019.

I don't see a real trend toward dry springs at that station either... but last year was very dry.

Salem had above average precip 2014-17, and was actually slightly above average in 2021.

One of the reasons some of those years ended up below average up here is because the bulk of the precip came in the winter, we get a lot of precip in the spring here compared to the valley. So a parched May like we had in 2018 is only going to come in 1" or so below normal in the valley, but we usually get 5-6" of rain in May, so it's going to have a big impact on our seasonal total.
