[Missing] March 2022 PNW Wx Discussion

Recommended Posts

It was essentially nighttime when I walked to the bus stop in high school in spite of it being DST. Pointless concern IMO.

I’d argue school days are too long as is. No reason to keep students there more than 4-5hrs per day, staggering classes/subjects bi-weekly or each semester.

How about just moving clocks up 30 minutes instead of permanent Daylight or standard time? Good compromise

That cuts the actual benefits of DST in half, and makes the change seem exceedingly arbitrary. Almost like we're just changing the clocks because it's "what we've always done" or "it's the thing we do."

Also adding just half an hour is logistically annoying.

There's unfortunately a very big reason (for elementary age)- childcare is FAR too expensive in this country.

They had us doing six courses at a time at my HS. Six.

There is no way a tired, perpetually annoyed 14-18y/o is going to learn all of that material effectively. Better to reduce the course count and provide a higher quality of education in each class. After all, a good 1-3 of those courses ended up being filler anyways.

The only REAL solution to the child daylight issue during the winter months would be to simply fall back two hours each day at 4am and then spring forward after sunset.

Saving the life of even ONE child will make it entirely worth it.

Cedar Lake station at 1,560 feet averages 8.10 inches of rain in March.     We might be due for some drier than normal months up here.  👍

I wasn’t learning jack s**t in high school. I  admit I rarely showed to class up except for test days, and still got As and a few Bs. I was that dude smoking a joint outside the back of the school building every afternoon. They basically regurgitated the same curriculum each year, very little new material. Useless.

Got fed up with it and dropped out in senior year, immediately got a GED and started work with a landscape company while taking night classes at MC and UMUC. Transferred to UMD 3 years ago to finish my meteorology degree (minor in physics). The math is challenging but that’s what makes it enjoyable for me.

In the end the decision to drop out held me back several years, but I picked up plenty of life skills along the way, which have proven very useful since. Definitely more-so than anything I learned in high school. Especially the humanities bulls**t.

Not in this new normal. Down here we've been due to not have a bad fire season...neither have happened. At least we finally got some rain this month. A whole 2.68" which is above normal for March so far. You'd probly like the weather here from March-early July if you ever get a wild hair for a spring home.

July-Sept are generally a slog of numerous 90F+ days and not fun to run the AC constantly in our house with basically zero insulation.

Spring is by far the nicest time of year here IMO. Though I don't consider March a spring month. It usually snows, and we average 9" of precip during the month. 6.15" so far this month. Not terrible.

In regards to risk of students being hit, this also happens after school hours. I had to stay extra often to get some last minute work done, it got dark quick on standard in the early evening.

There will always be mixed opinions on the subject, but overall I'm going for year round DST. For the students that need some extra credit after school hours, it'll stay light longer.

I agree, and I work in education. Was a school nurse, am a social worker now. I've had two kids get hit this year, and both were in full daylight. The problem? Folks on their mobiles or otherwise not paying attention to the road. And honestly, with the way things are now, kids on the secondary side are coming home in the dark @4:30, so we are just switching one period of darkness for another. As it is, I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark. With permeant DST, I would at least get to see a sliver of daylight at the end of my day which would be amazing. LOL went to the dr a month ago and shocker, I'm vitamin D deficient due to the lack of light. I wasn't back in August.

I mean, if you really think about it, taking out the sun would help with the whole problem of rampant, out of control wildfires, right? And then all the folks who've fled CA and jacked up our housing prices can go back as it would no longer be a dystopian firescape. Plus we would would get more snow.....

Yeah, okay. Forget my earlier sun worshiping comments. @FroYoBro has my vote. Destroy the sun!

Looking at the euro…through day 10 we would be at 2.80” for the month by 3/26. Figured this month would be wetter…but we did have over 4” of rain in the final 24 hours of February. Looking back on the last 60 days…if you take out the big rainstorm at the end of February it’s been pretty dry. 7.33” of rain in the last 60 days but 4” of that fell in 24 hours.

You would never need snow tires in April in Bothell.   You rarely need them in the middle of the winter.  😃
