Not true - Russian forces are still slowly advancing in Donbas and east of Kharkiv, one or several villages at a time, usually every day. Ukraine reportedly attempted to assault Snake Island but was repelled yesterday, while a Ukrainian counteroffensive near Kherson has not even been confirmed to have happened at all (yet) while Russia denies it. Battles for that region have been largely limited to artillery duels, given the vast open terrain.

Russia nears 'tactical' victory in Severodonetsk as villages fall (The Telegraph, June 22)

Russian forces just encircled at least 1,500 Ukrainian troops in the Zolotye area.

Ukraine is running out of ammunition as prospects dim on the battlefield (The Washington Post, June 10)

And that is coming from many of the same Western media outlets that repeatedly claimed that Russia was running out of tanks, ammunition, weapons, manpower since the beginning of the invasion in February. As stated in the article, Russia fires approximately 50,000 shells a day on Ukrainian positions, while Ukraine is able to return fire with only 5,000-6,000 shells a day.

Kyiv asks for more weapons as up to 200 Ukrainian troops die each day (New York Post, June 10)

Western media and western intelligence (almost exclusively US and UK intelligence) have been reporting (well, estimating) Russian death tolls since Day 1 of the invasion. While Russia is obviously very likely underreporting their own deaths (as all sides of every single war always do), western media (yes - that includes official government intelligence agencies) I strongly believe are overestimating Russian death tolls by a massive amount, as a part of a large-scale information warfare campaign just like Russia has been engaging in. Intelligence agencies specialize in this specifically - also notice how suspiciously silent they are regarding Ukrainian death tolls. Reporting your own/allies' death tolls doesn't look good, especially when those numbers may be high or rising. Daily Russian death tolls peaked during their bloody Kyiv offensive during the first couple months of the war, hence why Russian forces are not operating in the north of the country anymore. Estimates from independent observers (mainly of the OSINT variety whom mostly reside in European countries) reported 85+ killed every day on the Russian side in March-April, and has been steadily declining since then as Russian forces regrouped, scaled-down its territorial ambitions, began steady rotations of troops and focused on attrition & long-range artillery tactics in the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine. Meanwhile Ukraine's death toll seems to be experiencing the opposite effect since the fall of Mariupol. Since May 1, daily death tolls from Ukraine's own government (MoD, Zelensky's administration and aides, and senior AFU commanders) have gradually undergone the following transformation:

Up to 50 UA killed daily; 50-100 killed daily; 100-200 killed daily; and currently variations between 200 and 500 killed daily (the former estimate probably being closer to reality at this point).

Silence from US and UK intelligence regarding these figures which come from Ukrainian officials themselves. Western media, as I pointed out in previous posts, seem to be realizing what is happening (with some exceptions, looking at you Newsweek). During the first several months, Ukraine was quiet about their own casualties (as expected) but that seemed to change after Mariupol, perhaps realizing the increasingly worse position they are in, and strongly desire the West to send more heavy weapons and advanced MLRS, or even intervene directly in Ukraine against Russian forces.

Here is an account of the current situation (allegedly) in Sieverodonetsk, Ukraine as well as the current state of the Armed Forces of Ukraine by an American volunteer with Ukrainian forces:

The Ukraine troops need a handful of US Special Forces to kick up the communications and chain of command.
Just being passionate and willing to fight is only a beginning.
It’s not a strategy.
