Well... it appears we are going with a 2011 type spring.

Looking for the positive aspects for those who enjoy the warm season... there was no rain out here in the Snoqualmie Valley for a 16-day period centered around the 4th of July in 2011.   That is pretty darn nice and better than most years.    There was almost no rain at all from mid-July through mid-September in 2011.    We had about 30 days with rain in that same period in 2019.

If we are repeating 2011, at least it won’t be “overdue” anymore and you’ll have that monkey off your psyche.

This is a d**n impressive La Niña signature, considering it’s almost May. Actually more reminiscent of 1999 than 2011, especially relative to the (detrended) global anomaly in both years.3389E95F-592C-4762-9CF4-A854D17E78BA.png

Massive improvements in the statewide snowpack out here this month! So great to see and more significant snow/rain is on the way this week! April really came through this year after a really dry winter, especially for the mountains.

Yes!   things are slowly improving which is great, but for many areas, what moisture did fall, was just a drop in the bucket.  May and June are known as our wettest months of the year, so if things work out in our favor, maybe we can push fire season away a bit.

I have been thinking about the massive release of pollen this past weekend... that was pretty unusual timing given that the same thing had already happened back in March and almost always happens in March.    I think it might have been a secondary response to the very cold period earlier in April.    Someone posted an article about trees responding to very cold weather after coming out of dormancy and it said the trees will just go through another cycle when the weather warms up because a proper leaf out is critical for survival.

Pretty insane +SOI numbers now.

https://www.longpaddock.qld.gov.au/soi/

The 30 and 90 day combined average is actually the highest it’s been since the start of this La Niña in 2020. Crazy stuff.

Thread title was on the money.

Lol it was kind of a joke at first when I started the thread but then it ended up being pretty accurate. 2008 and 2011 did not have a large lowland snowstorm in mid April though.

This month has been wetter the farther south you go overall…which is a good thing. Probably only going to end up a bit above average rainfall here.

Interesting. Have noticed the same thing out here after sharp spring cold snaps. Do you know which trees are responsible for the output?

Looks like some interesting weather moving onshore.

Sky looks kinda convective…getting some sunbreaks here will also help instability.

I know this is a bit off topic, but with all of the cold weather geeks on here, it seems worth a share.  There is a guy based in Bellingham that has a youtube channel called "Living the Van Life."  He used to go on camping adventures in an old VW Vanagon, but recently upgraded to a Sprinter Van.

He drove up to the Arctic Circle this past February, and the camera work is phenomenal.  This is the 3rd of 3 videos, and in my opinion the best.

I wonder if I could make it in my Sportwagen?  LOL!  There is a guy who installed a diesel fired heater in his Wagen, and my car is lifted, so really the only challenge I have is having enough space to store what I need.

I bet you could. The two major highways to the far north (Alcan and Stewart-Cassair) are maintained for travel by all categories of vehicle. No special equipment required. Main things are to get your vehicle checked out to be sure it has no imminent issues (you want to minimize the chance of breaking down in a remote area), and to be alert for areas of road damage, slowing down when needed (there is ALWAYS significant road damage, due to the arctic and subarctic climates being so hard on roads).
