April has been a rare exception to what has over the last decade or so been a persistent long-term pattern well worth the griping. The numbers speak for themselves any way you want to crunch them.

Models trending gradually cooler and wetter is likewise a rare and welcome change to how things usually go.

And right on schedule….

Well, yeah. You take a gratuitous, mean-spirited shot at people, you gotta expect some blowback.

With my wife's surgery, I don't even really have the mental energy to point out how warm and dry it had been over the past few years. Dec-Apr aside from Jan has been pretty fun. I feel like this will also be our first cooler and wetter than normal month in quite some time.

Yeah, it's a real thing, but this year seems to be behaving differently. Doesn't mean our perceptions will change overnight, or that the next five years won't go back to more of the same.

I'm buying on Phil's late 90s vibe in regards to the upcoming pattern. More like one of those years than 2011, IMO.

Looks like May 1999 (The one Phil has been mentioning) was tied for 5th coolest on record at Silver Falls. #1 is 2011, #2 is 2010.

As of this morning it looks like we are at 8.43" of rain on the month. We will not come close to the April record of 13.13" from 1993. An outside shot at 10", which would be the first time since 2011 and would get us into the top 10.

Looks like the record for May is 10.50" from 1960. Only other May with over 10" was 1977.

Going further back, 1937 was another one of our great wet Aprils and is the wettest on record for a number of stations with a long POR. Actually followed it up with a pretty dry May, and then a very wet/muggy June. Then a very pleasant summer followed. Only 4 days of 90+ that year in Portland.

I bet you could. The two major highways to the far north (Alcan and Stewart-Cassair) are maintained for travel by all categories of vehicle. No special equipment required. Main things are to get your vehicle checked out to be sure it has no imminent issues (you want to minimize the chance of breaking down in a remote area), and to be alert for areas of road damage, slowing down when needed (there is ALWAYS significant road damage, due to the arctic and subarctic climates being so hard on roads).

I think the biggest risk for me would be the lack of 4wd/awd.  I get around Bellingham just fine, but it looks like parts of his trip were no joke in terms of icy roads.  Maybe if I went with studded tires.  I'm not gonna lie, I am kinda mulling it over.  In all reality though, It's a stretch for my 6'3" 275# frame to sleep in the back, add in 2-3 weeks of supplies/winter gear, and its probably a bit much.

What funny is Larry Cosgrove is still very much on the weak El nino train for end of summer fall.

Yeah that almost certainly isn’t happening.

In fact this is the first year I can remember without any “spring barrier” issues in seasonal guidance. Mostly because the system state is so deeply entrenched in its La Niña state. Usually ENSO weakens during the warm season, but might not be the case this year.

I brought up the 1998-2001 (1999 in particular) because it also stayed strong through the summer, and was a 3+ year event.

Both 2008 and 2011 pulled back during the summer months. They still had a La Niña element to their respective low frequency states, but it was weaker.

The last week here has been nothing but nice weather it seems.  Blue skies with clouds.  No real rain and no showers other than a sprinkle that lasted a minute and disappeared.  I know it's been more showery in other parts of the sound, but not much of anything in the Convergence Zone the past week.

Got to fully pull out hedge, sand and prep a fence, paint it, pour concrete, and install it with no rain whatsoever over the course of the past week.

It has been blustery the past two days, I like that.

You should move out of the rain shadow.   And I should move into the rain shadow!    There has been numerous downpours here today.

And just heard a loud clap of thunder now.

We can trade for a week or two if you'd like.  Give it a try, lol.  But once summer hits and it starts getting above 70F, I am going to want to move back to my area. 😉  Heck, maybe I should buy a place in Crescent City where summers are in the low 60s. :)

Yesterday I was going to run home early and haul more dirt and mulch to my garden but it started pouring around 3pm or so…Had the same thought today as it’s been halfway decent, but the radar looks just like it did yesterday so I’m not going to bother.

I predict this post gets at least 5 wieners slapped on it! Maybe more!!

I wanted my wood chip mulch before finishing the dirt for the garden to make it easier to get in there with the tractor…Have I ever mentioned how much I dislike April…

Or you could work in the rain. It’s like taking a shower only you finish dirtier than when you started.

I have to take the tractor up the side of the house by the propane tank which is pure mud when raining. My plan is to gravel that stretch since grass will not grow due to thick tree cover but haven’t gotten that far. The mud then gets into the tread of the tractor tires and leaves a hell of a mess in the driveway. On dry days it’s a non issue. First world problems I know.
