Have been watching cams…so far just south of Tumwater and yelm it’s snowing but precip is having difficulty making it north. Looks like it’s snowing once you get NW of Olympia though.

Honestly wasn’t sure we could pull something like this off this late in the year. It’s something you’d see in the mid 20th century some pretty historic stuff especially in Oregon.

I think even if some of this precip eventually works it’s way north it’ll probably be too late in the morning for snowfall. Precip isn’t translating to much on the surface north of Olympia in the Puget sound region. Decent radar echoes here on several websites but nothing making it to the ground in and around Lakewood/Tacoma.

This snow shower has pushed us over 50” on the season. Only the 3rd time that’s happened in 11 winters up here, 2011-12 and 2018-19 were the other two.

This location is great with cold/onshore flow. We got completely hosed in February 2021, just had about 1/2" of freezing rain, only snow that month was a week earlier. So it evens out on that end. I am often envious of the continental airmasses you get up there.

Got down to 30 last night, the snow (or even rain for that matter) just cannot seem to make it up here.  It would have been fun to have had April snow, but we had a good blast earlier this winter so I can't really complain.

For those who got missed out this past winter and are getting snow now, I leave you this:

This is the first time since February 2014 and March 2012 before that, where I can remember getting significantly more snow than you during an event. I think we had a lot of snow in late February 2019 when it was just cloudy up there, but we also had rain the day you got 45" so...

Lol, positive splats here but doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen. We did better overall than a lot of people with that heavy snow band yesterday in western WA so can’t complain.

Once I melt down the snow overnight, we should be over 5" of precip on the month. Average is 6.29" so we should easily end up above average this month. A top tier wet April is still in the 10-12" range, not sure we get there, but still pretty good. The valley has done pretty well so far this month, but with the upsloping the foothills and Cascades have been squeezing out a ton of moisture.

Pony, MT saw 47" of snowfall over 24hrs...just insane! Nearly 4ft of snow not at a ski resort or on a mountain over a 24 hour period is hard for me to comprehend.😲 Although I'm sure @Brian_in_Leavenworth can relate!

Screen Shot 2022-04-13 at 9.20.34 AM.png

Yeah normally when they plow it just creates berms on the side of the road or they push it to corners of parking lots.  When it is 3-4 feet, it is just too much.  Leavenworth had to pile it in a parking lot next to the river and then remove it in March because the state didn't want it melting into the river due to chemicals in the snow that would have been on the road when it plowed.

4 days straight now with snow.   We rarely see that even in December or January.  Another 4 inches or so and still snowing hard.

Had a lot of rain snow mix last night and even wet snow at points but nothing really stuck. Cant complain too much though, still impressive and much more typical for April. Although the freak snowstorm Monday morning definitely set the bar higher for what this month is capable of

Low of 35, mostly cloudy and 39 currently. Could be another really cool day especially if there are less in the way of sunbreaks

The snowstorm down there may have been a once in a lifetime experience. Almost as unbelievable as last June’s heatwave but not quite.

This kind of pattern is not uncommon for March, but getting it in April is pretty legit. We had more snow overnight last than we've had in the previous 10 April's I've been up here. Before this year we had only had 1"+ in April twice. 4/3/2012 when we had 2.5", and 4/15/15 when we had 1". I would not be surprised if we had somewhere in the 10" range for snowfall in the month of April 2011. I was living in town and drove up here a couple times that month on days there were solid 2-3" snow falls. This month still probably won't end up as cold as that one. Though we only had one sub-40 high in April 2011, the warmest high that month was only 60!
