I honestly don't even know how to feel about them. One week it's the largest comeback in NFL history, the next it's a blowout ugly loss. They are so inconsistent that even though they got into the playoffs, I can't see them making it very far. Hopefully it's just some first-year-new-coach/team kinks that can be ironed out for next season.

That 12-4 record looks good on paper but they are horrible.

Appears the NFL already determined who they want to be the #7 seed next week!
If the Hawks wins the early game then the SNF is meh because DET would already be eliminated by then. What do they have to play for unless to be a spoiler.

These games under this scenario should be played at the same time. The MLB and NBA does this. Even Soccer.

Truly the worst 12-4 team ever.

I saw one of the sports writers in Minnesota said the Vikings will either win the Super Bowl or lose a playoff game by 40 points.   😀

Damar Hamlin of the Bills is now in critical condition. Very terrifying situation. I don’t think a player has ever had the worst happen in the 102+ year history of this league.

My wife thinks maybe heart condition and not directly a football injury.

It was horrifying to watch Damar Hamlin become limp and collapse on live tv.  Prayers really going out to him and the family.  I guess the 'positive' is that he is in critical condition, which means he is alive... I just hope he comes out of this without major damages.  It's pretty serious what happened to him.

Was watching CNN and other news outlets outside of the sports networks for medical analysis. We won't know until there is some confirmation but seems like the consensus from these medical doctors is that it's commotio cordis, a lethal blunt force to the heart region that caused disruption to the heart rhythm. Watching replays of the play, it made a lot of sense and at the same time, extremely fluky. Timing had to be right during the hit for this to happen.

I think the most scary aspect of this is the fact that they tried to resuscitated him for over 10 minutes, that's 10+ mins of without oxygen to the brain.

Just very sad, scary and unfortunate. Hopefully this young man recovers.

Sounded like the hit to the heart had to happen precisely during the P wave (I think it is) part of the heartbeat cycle. His chances are better since they were preforming CPR and the defibrillator in under 3 minutes from him going down. Hoping for the best. Was tough to watch it unfold live.

Not true.  In fact the whole purpose of CPR is to deliver oxygen to the brain.  It certainly is not as good at delivering oxygen to the brain as normal breathing/heart beating would be, in fact only about 20% as effective, but that can keep someone alive.  Especially when done by professionals.

Certainly brain damage is a concern though.

I have a CPR certification so I’m very aware of what CPR is for. There was a missing word in there where it should’ve said “without proper/sufficient oxygen to the brain”

These days, thanks to proper CPR and AED events like these have increased the chance of survival dramatically compared to 10-15 years ago. And I firmly believe that because of the medical responses tonight this young man didn’t die on the field.

That makes more sense, thanks for the clarification.  Also CPR trained, as is my RN wife who has actually done it a few times.  Though as a hospice RN, she likely won't be doing it any time soon, at least not on the job.  And so far I have not had to do it yet, though I am trained for it due to my job.

There were a lot of talks after it happened that obviously the first thing to do is to get a pulse back and performed CPR to provide oxygen to the brain. But as far as I know, that window is very tight (within 3 mins) or so. I'm very curious to know how much time was lost (if any) to get his football equipment off so they can properly perform CPR and then defib. 9+ mins is an awful long time imo. The main concern now is neuro functions.  Hoping for the best for this young man.

People were also freaked out at the news that he was intubated, but that is pretty much standard procedure for something having gone through CPR.

I see lots of chatter online from people saying the NFL should cancel the rest of the season... and the playoffs and the Super Bowl.     Just seems like a massive overreaction.    Thousands of people would be put out of out work from stadium and team support staff to TV broadcast support staff.  Do other companies shut down for good when an employee has a heart attack while working?

The NFL resumed play 10 days after 9/11.   This was a very rare and tragic incident resulting from a totally normal football play. I don't think Damar Hamlin would want the NFL to shut everything down.

We live in an interesting time with social media.

Seriously though. NFL got themselves in a pickle by canceling the game. There is no way they can make the game up at this point. Which is wild because it was an incredibly important game. They could rule the game as a tie. Or they could play the game this weekend and cancel all the other games. Every team ends the season with 16 games. That would be giving up a lot of money though. They had to cancel the game last night from a public relations stand point. 25-30 years ago they would have finished the game.

Guessing the playoffs get pushed back a week... and the Super Bowl break goes from 2 weeks to 1 week like it used to be.   And then next weekend there will be just the rest of the Bills-Bengals game.   Both teams are playing again on Sunday anyways.

It’s interesting because I was watching the Citrus bowl yesterday and a Purdue player suffered a very serious injury with about 5 minutes left with Purdue trailing 52-7. He was immobilized on a stretcher and loaded onto a cart and taken off the field. It seemed pretty pointless to resume and finish the game, 52-7, 90% of the fans had already left, but they restarted the game almost immediately.

On a more positive note... Damar Hamlin's GoFundMe account for needy children has gone from about $7,500 to almost $6 million in the last 24 hours.   That is pretty cool.

Logic seems suspect here, given that social media existed for both these games.

Players are carted off the field all the time. A player does not go into cardiac arrest and need CPR to stay alive, with an ambulance right next to him, pretty much ever in the NFL.
