I think I’m going to take a bit of a break from the forum. Figured it would be best for me. I might log back on to post any interesting weather obs with that Sunday airmass but otherwise I’ll probably be off for the next several days.

Looks like SLE and EUG had about 1/2" of rain in the 6 hour period ending at 11am.

There is no drought in WA state as been previously discussed.

The difference between severe drought and a surplus in eastern WA comes down to as little as an inch of precip... and the recent precip departure formula used in that drought index map does not work for eastern WA.    They have an abundance of available water at this point.

Big improvements for many though. Droughts do not just disappear overnight and the CPC is very conservative.

If this moisture train keeps up into June most areas in the NW will be drought free.

Record number of days at SEA with a high temperature ≤ 55F in May is 10 from 1999. 2010 comes in tied for 3rd at 8 (with 2002 and a couple other years). We should break into the top 10 of years by the end of the weekend with 6, and Monday should probably make it 7 with 2/3 of the month still to go.

Up here, quite a bit wetter for the day than forecast last night with 0.57" of rain already. Looks like I could pick up another quarter of the inch or more for the day.

Grand solar minimum could be part of the reason, and it looks to peak in 2028-2032.

There almost *has* to be some kind of warmup ahead of the next -NAO & discontinuous retrogression of the NPAC ridge, which is timed for the 3rd week of the month.

So that’d place it right in the middle of May. If it doesn’t happen that would be pretty crazy.

Is it too early to cancel summer?

I was perfectly comfortable in shorts and a t-shirt at the Sounders game last night (first MLS team ever to be Concacaf champs!) which didn't get out till after 9 PM. Definitely impressive how chilly today has been with the steady light rain.

People around me are starting to get bent out of shape because other parts of the country are well into summer weather and here we are with lingering winterish weather. I couldn't be happier but I never say that to them. I just nod my head and tell them it will turn around soon enough while I secretly hope for a green tomato summer. 🙂

Was just checking out what the summer of 1955 looked like up here. Got hot in early June, but then a big cool wet period in late June/early July. August was dry and there was another big heatwave in early September, though overall it was a wet month. October was extremely wet, one of the wettest on record up here.

There’s a November vibe starting to kick in. Not sure what that would mean for our January madness…

January 1956 wasn't terrible. Also one of the wettest we've seen. Got pretty cold with lowland snow at the end of the month.

That was a really wet active winter, storm train got going early too.

I mean that’s how it’s supposed to work anyway. Recent springs were an aberration, not the norm.
