SEA put up another double digit minus departure today with a -10 so far.  Still time for a -11 if it drops another couple degrees before 1am (midnight standard time).

In truth, the weather since the 2nd half of August last year has been great. Colder than normal way more often than not, plenty of precipitation, and an intense Arctic event around Christmastime to boot. Nice to finally tip the scale in the other direction.

1955 certainly comes to mind.  The persistence of cold that year was ridiculous.

Downright brisk out there this evening with a temp of 42 here already.  Our furnace has still been coming quite regularly this month, and our lawn is growing at half the normal rate for this time of year if that.  Pretty impressive cold.

Looks like our mean temp for May so far is 45.3. Coldest May on record is 2011 with a 46.1 mean. One would think the 2nd half of the month is warmer than the first, but we will have to see how things shake out. 

Down to 35 now, so a 40.5 daily mean today.

The clearing at SLE has allowed them to drop to 41, which gives them a -10.5 departure on the day.

Unfortunately KSEA did not stay below 50°F all day, but with a high temperature of 51°F, they broke its daily low high temperature record of 53°F set in 1999.

Down to 43°F now, good for a -9.9°F avg on the day. One more degree of cooling and they'll tie the record lowest avg. Two more and they set it. Record low is 38°F set in 2011. That is firmly out of reach before midnight, barring some insanity.

53/44 day here with steady cold rain through the late afternoon then a very pretty and sunny evening. Picked up .30” rain today.

Partly cloud and brisk for the time of year out this evening, already down to 44 which is the daily low so far. Moon is shining bright between puffy clouds.

KSEA is slightly ahead of 2011's pace. That does not include today, which ended up 2°F than this date in 2011 (so far)

45F with showers. Picked up 0.70" today and now 3.54" on the month. Just 49F for a mean so about 6F below normal. Fantastic stretch.

Wow!  17 degrees at Sunrise on Mount Rainier.  Only 6000 feet.  Another insane shot of cold air.  Even the Willapa Hills are in the low 30s at around 2000 to 2500 feet.

44 here this morning... it was raining when I woke up but has since stopped.

The weekend will be a little different than what we have had recently.  Models show some rain on both days but temps get into the mid 60s which is approaching normal.    Scattered showers and temps near normal sounds pretty amazing right now.    That is the break ahead of the next deep, cold trough that parks itself over us next week with highs struggling to get to 10-15 degrees below normal again.

People are bitching in Spokane.  We haven't hit 70 yet.  A month later than normal.  If we don't get there Sunday (forecast is 69) we may break the record of the latest 70.  I think that's May 21st or 22nd

We hit 73 5 weeks ago…we will see if we can finally get back there by the end of the month. Would be an amazing statistical feat to stay below 70 this entire month.

Objectively... they are probably correct.   Even 2008 and 2011 had more significant breaks between the cold troughing periods.     At this point in 1999 we were about to start a 10-day period with very little rain and the temp peaked at 79 out here on 5/24.
