Most of the other gases in the atmosphere don’t absorb in the IR bands that H2O does, though. A lot of it goes straight through. So it acts as a surface-to-TOA radiative forcing. It would possibly cool the stratosphere through collisions/diffusion of heat, if anything.

TOA?

How could absorbing more IR help cool the stratosphere? Just doesn’t make sense to me.

It's called clown range for a reason.

Top of atmosphere.

And it’s not due to IR absorption, it’s due to diffusion. Because H2O emits IR more readily than other gases, and can therefore emit after collisions with N2/O2 molecules that are in an excited state.

O2/O3 absorb UV+higher freq radiation and are plentiful in the stratosphere. It’s not like the atmosphere doesn’t absorb at those frequencies.

I was shocked when he still drove into work on a day with what must have been 8" of fresh snow!! Just another day there. What I imagine Covington area residents will be like in 10 years or so.

I don't remember many good thunderstorms last year, but I do remember one a few years ago that was a constant light show with heavy hail (maybe 2019?). I recall there was a tornado somewhere in NW OR/SW WA on that day, but I don't remember exactly when. That thunderstorm was amazing, and I hope we see some good ones this year.

NWS Spokane is pretty bullish on the convective outlook for my corner of SE WA /Idaho panhandle on 🌞 day. Should be interesting as we're due for a 70 degree day but with some interesting weather.

Rainy morning in Bozeman.  We had good flights with nothing more than the usual turbulence near the mountains.

Tiny bit of snow remained from the system that hit the other day, but I’m sure it is gone now.

I like my zippy little Jetta Wagon, but I have to admit the Toyota is starting to grow on me.  I blame @Jginmartini and all his talk about his recently acquired rig.

Also, my son is all kinds of excited about the picture released this morning of the black hole at the center of the galaxy.  He found out Monday that research he did about a year ago on black holes is going to get published, the news today, and then graduating tomorrow, not too shabby a week for a astrophysics kid!

Not sure if anyone caught this, but Walla Walla broke their all time April cold record with a monthly average of 45.9°F. This beat 1955's record of 46.6°F by a full 0.7°F. POR dates back to 1949.

GFS is basically a train wreck if you want some drier weather anytime soon.  Assuming this year continues to follow 2011, that year dried out considerably in June, and then a very cool / dryish July, and a warm / very dry August.  1955 also had a very dry August, but that month was very cool.  At this point I think we have a very decent shot at a cool July.  If August is cool that would be one of the very few cool Augusts in this century.

Highs in the 40s that late would be very noteworthy for sure.  Also worth mentioning it shows a lot of places in the 30s on Monday night.

Very chilly VERY windy day in Bozeman, I didn't bring a coat to graduation and majorly regretted it.  In fact I was walking to a reception after graduation and noticed some white sh*t on my shirt.  I wiped it off, and more appeared.....wiped that off...more appeared....WTF?!?!?!?!?!

I finally realized it was wet/chunky snow LOL!

Checked in with my elderly neighbor back home, and she said it was windy and cold in Bellingham. 40/57 with 0.00" according to my weather station.

NAM throws some sfc based warm core convection tomorrow afternoon in the sound. EL's are super dichotic, either 500mb or 275mb, depending on how optimistic you are about the sfc parcel.

Nine times out of ten things are wayyyy too cloudy aloft or dry at the surface to support any sort of buoyant parcels. But the NAM shows dry air aloft, and there is excessive soil moisture (my grass is still as green as ever!) So who knows. Could be some interesting cloud formations tomorrow regardless. Potential is higher than usual, I'd say.

Also interesting to note how despite being in the "warm core" of the general circulation, with SW'lies and building heights, high temps will still barely sniff normal.

That’s an insane pattern on the long range GFS. Looks like something you’d expect in November or December.

Ordinarily I’d discount it but a majority of EPS members have basically the same thing. And late May is the timeframe I was looking at for some serious troughing.

I have to say that trough later next week is a pretty one.  Shouldn't be too gloomy once the trough axis is east of us.  In fact next Saturday looks pretty decent at this point.

This regime has already proven to be quite extraordinary.  At this point we are reeling off big minus departures day after day without any effort whatsoever.
