That’s an insane pattern on the long range GFS. Looks like something you’d expect in November or December.

Ordinarily I’d discount it but a majority of EPS members have basically the same thing. And late May is the timeframe I was looking at for some serious troughing.

Really no break in the troughing recently. I remember a couple weeks ago we thought it’d be crazy if we went the whole month without a period of ridging…it’s only May 13th but it’s going that way.

Really astonishing GFS run after what we've already been through.  Flat out cold.

Given the decadal regime, I figured back in March that we would have it 85°F once or twice already by now.

Wow... 😳

Strongest jet since late March, which was stronger than anything seen since Fall of last year. This Spring is going nuts.

Speaking of hitting 80...In July 2011 it only made 80 here on two days.  That would be something to see after recent summers.

Last time SLE had a below average July was 2012. July 2011 was below average as well, though SLE did have two days that hit 90. July 2010 was slightly above average at the time, though it would be below average with the current averages.

Just looking back on last summer. Unbelievable how hot it was at SLE. Here are a few mind blowing stats.

It hit 100+ 6 times. 105, 113, 117 during the June 26-28 heatwave. But it also hit 100 on July 29th, and 103 on August 11th and 12th.

It hit 95+ 16 times! The heatwave from August 10-15 actually had 6 straight days over 95. There were 3 separate heatwaves in June with a high of 95+. The average high from August 1-15th was 92.9.

From July 24-August 4 it was 90+ 11 out of 12 days.

There were 41 90+ days. Things did cool down a bit in late summer, there were only 4 90+ highs after August 15th.

If not for all the smoke there would have also likely been a couple more 100+ days in late July and early August.

I think I blocked out how absurd August 2017 was. First 10 days of the month were 90+ at SLE with the first 3 days being 100+, peaking at 107 on the 2nd.

One more stat dive.

SLE has not had a daily record high in July since 2015, sadly that is month with the longest record drought at that location.

If we look at record lows though...

January: 2017 (Only one since 1980)

February: 2022 (Tied a record from 2018)

March: 1996

April: 2009 (Only one this century.)

May: 2002 (Only one since 1985.)

June: 1991

July: 1982

August: 1980

September: 2000

October: 2002

November: 2020 (First since 2000)

December: 2013

As you can see, because of the UHI, warm season record lows are pretty much off the table at SLE.

If you look at EUG however, they have record lows as recently as 2012 in June, 2018 in July, 2016 in August, and 2015 in September...

A more organized frontal system arrives on Sunday.  Steady rain by day will turn to showers in the evening. Itappears another disturbance is behind that for Tuesday with a stronger front with widespread rain and wind on Tuesday!! Wednesday looks like showers as the trough settles in Thursday!  It's gonna be fun! 🤞

Also, this is under 500'??!?

Apparently that whole valley is a great location for cold air damming, and the heavy precipitation plus nighttime timing made for one hell of a mid May snowfall. Near sea level.

Pretty amazing how cool overall the next week or so is looking, even though we warm up a little compared to the first few weeks of the month.

Snow levels were ridiculously low in spots with the trough that moved in Thursday. Widespread reports of snow below 1,000 out toward the coast. Fairly historic.

SEA has cracked 1 day above the maximum normal high this month. That occurred on May 4 with a high of 65. I’m starting to believe the rest of the month may not hit the maximum normal high.

Which is kinda absurd because by the end of this month, we should be near 70 for the normal.

Getting some more rain now. This has definitely been a very prolific La Niña spring and the euro looks to keep it that way going into the final week of May.

FYI

Blood Moonrise Tonight.

The entire eclipse will be over five hours long, starting at 9:32 p.m. EDT on Sunday, May 15, and lasting until 2:50 a.m. EDT on Monday, May 16.

However, the total phase of the eclipse, when the moon changes color, will last only about an hour and a half, starting at 11:29 p.m. EDT and ending at 12:53 a.m. EDT. The middle of the eclipse will be the best time to look at the moon and will occur at 12:11 a.m. EDT.

Sounds cool. Too bad it will be too cloudy for the PNW to see it.

Seems like places up north got some pretty weak totals, yet the complaining is still strong.

Rain is rain... totals are only important for statistics right now.     There is no additional benefit to putting more water on a sopping wet sponge.    It doesn't change anything.    If our vegetation prefers climo then some dry days would probably be beneficial.     But we seem to just get one extreme or the other.
