May Winter Continue 2022 PNW

Yeah the Puget Sound area was basically an oasis in a PNW blast furnace. It was ridiculously hot east of the Cascades too... As I said last night, I think the fact it wasn't as hot comparatively in Seattle, kind of makes it hard for Puget Sounders to relate to what other posters on this forum went through last summer. But even that aside, it's pretty astonishing how hot some of our recent summers have been August 2017 stands out as just being insane, July 2018 was very hot, though it didn't have extreme heat, 18 90+ days at SLE. August 2016 had some obscene heatwaves too. June/July 2015,  even the summers of 2013 and 14 were very hot down here.

Summer 2019 was not terrible though, SLE did somehow manage to hit 100 in late August and had a significant June heatwave, but overall it was only a warm summer. 2020 had a couple big heatwaves too, but was only a "warm" summer too.

No surprise summer 2021 was preceded by a record dry spring as well. As someone else here said, that’s what happens when your soil has no moisture left and is effectively just a massive hot plate. Basically a mini Dust Bowl.

And with the Willamette Valley dry, you can picture Central Oregon and interior California. Really no surprise the Bootleg and Dixie fires grew so fast and burned so much area. It was so dry in Sunriver in early July the pine cones would nearly disintegrate in your hand when you picked them up.

Today's system is pretty weak and precipitation is not really that big of a deal so a lot weaker than I thought. Base on satellite and radar, it's already outta here so most of the daylight hours will be fairly nice. Can still get yardwork and other stuff in, nothing to complain about. Rather have this than a heat dome.

ECMWF is much more promising for next Saturday than the GFS as the offshore blocking stays stronger.

We went camping down along the Eastern Sierra last June right before the big heatwave. It was unbelievably dry. Even more amazing was that campfires were still allowed and everyone in the campground had one blazing. I was nervous, but my wife had one going within 15 minutes of reaching the campsite.

Today has turned out pretty much exactly as I expected. Showers hanging up along the foothills continuing to dump rain all morning. Up to 0.83" since midnight (1.34" storm total), and 8.17" on the month. We have now passed 1988 for 8th wettest May on record.

Next up on the list are 1996&1945 at 8.40" and then 1941 at 8.46", without a doubt we will move into the top 5 this week.

In Eugene, 2016 is the only summer of the 9 summers from 2013-2021 that does NOT hold some kind of top 5 hottest summer record (average max, average min, average temp).

I believe 2014 still holds the record for hottest overall, although I haven't checked it against 2021.

I’d be surprised if 2021 wasn’t the hottest there. Pretty much all stations in WA/OR besides the Puget sound had all time hottest summers last year.

Time for you to move to Seattle. You would be loving this spring weather here recently. Sh*t you’d probably think it was heaven even during a warmer drier than normal spring compared to how it is over there.

We got off really easy last summer.  Just far enough NW to escape the blast furnace...except for June.

Even so it was still more of the same as we’ve seen in recent years. Warmer/drier than normal combo. Just not as bad as it could’ve been.

Yeah it was magnificent each of the last 3 times I visited. It actually cools off at night..lol.

The absence of insects (especially mosquitos) was another huge difference. We could eat outside on the deck without dousing ourselves with Off Deep Woods or lighting anti-bug candles.

You banana belters… I think 62°F is warmer than it has been so far this season at YVR. Presently 12.4°C/54.3°F at my place in East Van.

It's called clown range for a reason.

It's been really weird the last several years.  Almost all of the notable warmth has been in the summer while the winters have actually been ok for the most part.

I wouldn’t even say that. The immediate coast of the Sound saw some relief but once the clouds burned off temps readily soared, and you could tell the upper levels were warmer than usual. I can not for the life of me tell why KSEA remained so cool. That airport is so prone to westerly breezes.

There were days where SeaTac stayed in the 70s while it hit 85°F at my corner of the city. Not an absolute torch of a July but definitely more than just a smidge above normal.

Sure. I’m only referring to the evolution of the 500mb pattern.

-dAAMt begins around the 19th, and like clockwork the GFS has a mental breakdown over the Pacific.

Starting to get a bit concerned for tomorrow from 4-10pm. NWS is thinking possibly quarter size hail in my area and we have no garage. Anyone have any tips to protect our two cars from hail damage? Large hail west of the Rockies is very rare. Lightning we get, but hail not more than the size of graupel size. https://twitter.com/NWSSpokane/status/1525581567795470336/photo/1
