May Winter Continue 2022 PNW

The Blob

Recommended Posts

Had a massive burst of rain for about 2-3 mins. It was amazing to watch. Lightning about 2 miles away (per my spouse's count) but nothing insanely close. Convection seems to decrease per NWS Spokane. No hail so far.

Thank you. We are a bit disappointed that it's quieted down quite a bit. Glad for our cars but were hoping for a show too since the ground is too wet for fires when we have had t-storms in Summer. Property wise I'm thankful but weather wise we are sad it might be over.

On the visible sat pic there was some nice looking convection going on, but dry air rapidly spreading from the west.

Looks like PDX hit 70 again today. After the last few weeks it’s easy to forget how relatively easy it is at this point in the season with a reasonably mild airmass and some sun.

68/54 here. Afternoon rain and downpours then mostly sunny later on. Breezy too.

PDX seems to have avoided most of the heaviest downpours throughout the day, Hillsboro had more than a half inch while PDX had less than 0.2.

PDX hasn't recorded a sub-20 low since 2016-2017. Obviously some of that has to do with UHI, but Hillsboro hasn't recorded a sub-19 low either (19 in Nov 2019 and Feb 2022). I hope we can somehow get a sub-20 low next winter. Maybe we're paying back for the 11 degree low at PDX in 2017 and the 3 degree low at HIO in 2017.

Probably you are! That 2017 low beats last winter’s 4°F at YVR, which was the coldest in decades there.

It's called clown range for a reason.

The 0z GFS gives us some real hope for next weekend.  Chilly nights and seasonable dry days if it pans out as shown.

https://fox12weather.wordpress.com/2021/03/21/spring-break-a-tornado-wet-dry-parts-of-metro-area/

This precip map is really interesting to look at. Here in Bethany seems to be a dry area, and so does the PDX/Sauvie island areas. East Portland is definitely the wettest. Maybe the PDX dry area is because of the West Hills?

Here in Bethany it's probably because of the Coast Range, which is why I never do that great in onshore flow snow events.

It was a really great day, the sun came out in the evening. The little rain we got was nice too. Perfect day to do the first BBQ of the season.

Much worse from Seattle eastward... poured rain and was dark for almost the entire day.   Stopped raining for about an hour in the evening and then was raining hard again before it got dark.   Definitely much worse than originally shown in the models.    00Z ECMWF says we get a repeat next weekend.

Just out wondering around 😁!!!

it has been and incredibly amazing journey so far. With a friend down here in Prescott now and heading for Sedona soon!  Moab has been the most exciting though.  Unfortunately missed out on the storm’s chasing part of the trip so will be planning another trip for that.

Fuel has been brutal though 4.29-5.50 a gallon (87 unleaded).  So glad the 4Runner doesn’t demand premium.  I’m not getting any younger so the heck with the prices and on with the adventure!

Cooler air has not reached out here yet... 54 and raining this morning.

It has aloft. The only reason it is raining over your place is because of cold core convection. Weak stuff that that, but there is a slightly cooler airmass overhead and it is very slowly cooling, allowing nighttime sfc parcels to become slighly bouyant, when mixed.
