This might be the most impressive EPS run yet.

At least gets rids of that blocking ridge over Alaska for a little while.

Of course it comes right back.

@Omegaraptor I was reading the state climate report from January 1893. It says the first 13 days of the month were foggy at Corvallis, then snowy the 26th through the end of the month. Looks like they had a 37.8/25.1 average for temps that month and 13" of snow.

I'm happy that we got some snow down here in December considering these situations can be a lot worse for us. Even a subfreezing high according to some weather stations near me.

The February air mass was also pretty nice.

The April snowstorm down here was amazing though. 2 inches at my place in the middle of April, and up to 8 inches in other places.

Overall this winter was okay down here, would've been nice if the arctic air made it all the way down south but the snow was still nice!

Solid B- grade for me here on the northern edge of the metro area. I was out of town and it was spring and sloppy, but we still had a significant snowstorm here for the 2nd straight year, with 7" on 4/11. And a few snow days with the December stuff.

Would have probably been a full letter grade higher if we could have shaved just a few degrees off those late December temps. So in the grand scheme of things, like many winters in the NW lowlands, just a few minor details can make a big difference in our perceptions.

I don’t pay attention to reactions much. Andrew and I have been trolling harder than Cascadia by a country mile.

The degree to which some here obsess about reactions never ceases to amaze me, particularly when one considers that in other contexts some of those same obsessors would be complaining about “snowflakes” (and not the meteorological sort).

How much snow did Corvallis get in 2013/2014? I think they got some snow in December and then got a ton of snow in early February.

Officially the station on the OSU campus recorded 18.5".

Yeah seems to retrograde it when the jet retracts.

This pattern coming up is legitimately insane from a large scale dynamical standpoint. Jet extension culminated from poleward transport of +AAM previously deposited in the tropics, then rapid AAM removal/jet retraction late month with major -PNA episode likely in June under p8/1/2 MJO transit.

Few examples of such craziness in the 21st century.

I'd agree with that grade. I had a total of 6 or so inches this winter, similar to the NWS office. Somehow downtown only recorded 3.1 inches the entire winter, with one subfreezing high on Dec 27th.

2013-14 was a really solid winter for the Willamette Valley, but definitely one of the most boring up here. Two great arctic blasts, but literally nothing else.

An A+ winter up this way; coldest reading in 50+ years. Could have been snowier, but it was no slouch in that department and can’t have everything.

Unrelated but I was thinking about the winter of 2015/2016. December 2015 was the wettest month ever at PDX, and then we had that strange mini snowstorm in January. I think late Jan and Feb were very warm though.

that was a super el Nino that forgot to do super el Nino things in California. first super el Nino to not have above average precip.

Kind of torn between B+ or A- for this winter. We were definitely in C+ territory until late February, the Mid-April event probably pushes it to A- for me. 2016-17 was clearly the best overall winter since I've lived here. 2011-12, 2018-19 were probably on level with this winter, maybe slightly better. If I was grading on a curve this one would probably be a B+.

Yeah, downtown Portland did really horribly in late December. They were kind of the focal point of the Coast Range shadowjob on the 26th, and the little coastal sliders we got that week were pretty light in the central metro (we did better up here and on the eastside).

we're in C-/D+ territory in Spokane.  Below normal snow, only one real arctic blast that was subpar in delivering negative temps.  above/near normal and dry for meat of winter.  MEH

If I had to rank our winters at this location this is how I would rank them...

1) 2016-17: Great mix of cold and snow. Solidly cold and snowy December-early March.

2) 2018-19: Was completely awful until early February, but that February-early March stretch was mind blowing. Coldest February on record at Silver Falls.

3) 2011-12: No meaningful cold, but 4 major snow events.

4) 2021-22: Winter was saved by late February cold snap, Mid-April snow event was fairly historic.

5) 2017-18: Chilly December, cold snap in late February, major late March snow event. Kind of dry for a Nina winter.

6) 2019-20: Fairly solid from Mid-January-early April.

7) 2013-14: Two great arctic blasts, low seasonal snowfall totals, absolutely no interesting weather outside of a few days in early December and early February.

8 ) 2012-13: Decent late December, cold January.

9) 2020-21: About as bad a Nina winter as could have here. Several minor snowfalls in late January/early February. Significant ice event in February, only one sub-freezing high. A couple decent wind events.

10) 2015-16: Very active mid-November-early January. A couple of accumulating snowfalls in November, cold onshore flow snow in December with a white Christmas.

11) 2014-15: Worst winter by far. A couple of cold snaps in November, wet snow on Christmas eve. Lowest seasonal snow total by quite a wide margin.

I was also shadowed with the sliders, only 0.5 inches with the one on the 28th while the PQR office had 2.5 inches. I did get 2 inches with the first event though, so it wasn't that bad.

My area in Bethany is shadowed in onshore flow as well, but we can do really well in some patterns. I had 18 inches of snow in 2016/2017. Feb 2021 had around 4-5 inches of snow in my area and a ton of sleet.

I haven’t looked at subseasonal details in pre-2000 years yet.

Closest 21st century analog is 2011 which also had the Pacific MJO orbit in May. But it’s not a perfect match, either.

That’s some pretty wild stuff. Both 92-93 winters on record were excellent for Oregon it looks like.

There were some areas of Linn/Benton county that ended up with 18" with that February event.

Looks like my area had 6-10 inches with that. Way too much wind to measure properly though. The winds during that were really strong in my area.

It was a nice event up here, but from a snowfall standpoint it was nothing special. We had a 23/13 one day, which really stands out.

Yeah, the cold during that event was pretty nice. PDX recorded a high of 23 on one day, which is pretty impressive.

Tim's all time favorite PNW winters are 2002-03 and 1991-92. January 1985 does make his short list though.
