Despite the wind, this is probably one of the nicest days this spring here so far.  Rain stopped late this morning and the sun has been out in full force for several hours in a row.

Still dark and dank here.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Lots of rain earlier... partly sunny and fairly pleasant now.   We don't have nearly as much wind as places to the west of us.

I can still clearly remember the big boom and running to my parents room slightly freaked out. I was 3.5yrs old.

This is an incredible compilation of videos of the Andover KS tornado.

Easy to see how deaths occur in these.

And that's an EF3. The strength of EF5 winds is simply mind-blowing.

Just as an example, in Smithville, MS on 4/27/11

"The remains of an SUV that was thrown half a mile into the top of the water tower seen in the background before bouncing off of it, traveling another 1/4 mile in the air, impacting the ground and eventually coming to rest near the parking lot of the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home on the opposite side of town"

I was a high school senior, was at work in the pro shop at Highlands Golf Course in Tacoma. I heard on the radio that the mountain blew, went outside and was able to see the ash plume.

Unrelated to the eruption, I was fired from the golf course job a couple weeks later when I went to a grad kegger in ocean shores instead of going to work. #responsibility

I just vaguely remember coming out of my sister’s piano recital and it was snowing. Then immediately I remembered that thicknesses were wayyy above 1290dm and thought “hey, wait a cotton pickin’ minute!”

Pretty crazy summer. And the winters surrounding it were bad as well.

…And those are 1991-20 anomalies. Anomalies from climo that includes 2015 itself, alongside other torrid 2010s summers. In reality add something like 1-3°F and you’ll get a more realistic representation of how far from climo those summers strayed.

2015 was our 7th hottest summer on record as well. Those +TNH patterns are the f**king worst.

Similar story with the summer madness. 7 out of the top-10 hottest summers on record have occurred since 2010. At some point it has to end, right?

2015 was a lovely summer here. Below normal overall, and July was the coolest we've seen since 2009.

Winters are all over the place, but hot summers here are generally cool in the PNW and vice versa due to shorter wavelengths.

Good point as well. One week made a huge difference for the averages. Much more than one week most summers would.

I remember that being discussed as last summer concluded and people weighed the historical significance...

Yes, and I think this argument is much more relevant for the Puget Sound area. Obviously Salem for instance broke their all-time record multiple times and by 9 degrees when they hit 117, so that will skew things. I think for that location though, you probably have to give 2021 the edge.

100+ Highs

95+ Highs

2015: 14

90+ Days

I'm willing to say for the region as a whole 2015 and 2021 are pretty similar overall. With many spots giving a slight edge to 2015.

Nuff said. 😉

But seriously, you won't find any station that saw 2021 that much warmer than 2015.

Today is probably not the best day... some wicked wind with this storm system.   There are really beautiful scenes to be had over there at times depending on the weather and time of year.    The wine country has some gorgeous landscapes.    And of course you are lumping in Spokane and the rolling hills of the Palouse and Walla Walla by saying eastern WA is ugly.    Not really fair... but I don't take offense since I don't even live there.   Andrew wants to live in eastern WA though.

Are you coming back to Portland for a visit?

Spokane was indeed looking lovely, very lush and much less windy!

Actually headed to Bend (going to snow in Bozeman again on Fri/Sat) for the weekend for a bit of a sunny vaca! Which I also found entertaining cause Bend seems to be the hot goss for today as well!

You're being kind of unfair.  A lot of Central and Eastern WA has trees and gorgeous scenery.  Not to mention a much better climate.

I was mentioning earlier today that this weekend is a clear win for the GFS.   You were talking last weekend about it being nice based on the GFS... and I was skeptical and assumed the ECMWF would be right as usual.    But the ECMWF actually caved.   👍

High of 57°F today at KSEA. Kind of an underperformance and fairly in line with what the Euro was going for yesterday.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I was wondering, where did the main low for the February 2021 storm end up hitting? I think it was the one on the night of the 12th.

It kinda died just off Grays Harbor.

My preferences can beat up your preferences’ dad.

All this talk about eastern WA, I just HAD  to take a look for myself.

Can confirm, it’s ugly. Dry as a sandbox with blowing dust everywhere. Sorry Tim!
