I could handle Billings, but Bozeman or Butte would be a tall order. Elevation is a killer. I was over there in June 1992 at the Little Bighorn. It was not warm. I wore shorts anyway. I was in Butte in July 1993. We were scraping our windshield. I would honestly consider moving over to Billings though. I like it over there.

Billings would be too hot and dry in the summer for me so we're still quite happy where we're at. I'd honestly be fine if it never hit 80 degrees during the summer. But yeah, the early summer and late summer snows can be a bit annoying especially since we're even a bit higher than town at 5,350ft.

It's all worth it though cause the summers here are gorgeous when we don't get smoked out by the west coast fires. Our first three summers here were mainly smoke free but the last two were the exact opposite so hopefully we can reverse that trend this summer!

My limited experience with Billings did not leave me impressed. An area that was gorgeous when I drove through last fall was Whitehall. Don’t know much about that area.

My impression of Billings is massive oil and gas refineries and it literally stinks.    And casinos in regular restaurants and gas stations.  Of course I think that is all of Montana... but always seems really odd to me.

My wife said Billings reminded her of a larger Klamath Falls. Whenever she compares a place to Klamath it is not an endorsement.

What a shame! I've been there twice. I went to the reenactment in June 1992. Jack Palance was the master of ceremonies.

April 1989 was spectacular... the complete opposite of this April.     SEA had 13 days above 65 degrees and almost hit 80 twice that month.   Ended up at +3.0 for temperature and about 50% of normal rainfall.     Literally the opposite of 2022.

May 1989 flipped to cooler and wetter.   But it still averaged 4 degrees warmer than this May.    And SEA had 8 days above 70 that month.    Way better than this past month.   Close to a climo May.

June 1989 was pretty amazing for a Nina year in June.   Warmer and drier than normal.

July and August were both drier than normal as well... but ended up 2-3 degrees cooler than normal.

So far... that warm season looks like a dream compared to 2022.     👍

Culmination of factors. That La Niña was also collapsing rapidly during the spring, while this one was/is strengthening.

1988 might be a better ENSO analog as that Niña was borderline strong by summer. This one will also likely be the strongest since 1999 during boreal summer.

They have a dynamic climate there. They are like Denver but farther north. You'll see wild horses and other things. It definitely has a Columbia Basin vibe to it.

88-89 Nina was kind of bipolar like that. Didn't completely follow the classic Nina template. It had the historic heat at the end of summer 1988, a blowtorch October, a splitty December, so-so January, historically frigid February, a cool/wet March, a torchy April which is most unusual for a Nina, a warm/ridgy June, and finally a very cool midsummer.

Would be fine by me. I've guesstimated we had maybe ~30" or so here that year. Lot of scattered smaller events with a big one in mid to late February (as per usual).

February has gone from the outhouse to the mansion in my lifetime. He should write a book. It's a feel good story that would probably make a great movie. Meanwhile, his brother, January, has gotten strung out on crack. He's currently living in a van down by the river.

April and May of 1988 ended up right around normal for temperature and a little wetter than normal.     For comparison... May 1988 averaged 56.4 at SEA and this May was 52.6     The 1988 temp was almost perfectly normal.    April/May was much nicer in 1988.

Summer was a little cooler than normal in 1988... and it was drier than normal for the JJA period.

Sort of a whimsical day with cottonwood wood fluff gently falling all day.

Meanwhile I’m HOT as Hell due to the virus….compliments of my last stop in PDX visiting my brother who informed me 2 days ago he tested positive.
Trapped in my house now….sad panda

Yeah and the massive oil refineries are a no go for me. There are some nice areas that you don’t see from I90 but I don’t think I could ever live there.

Whitehall is a super cute little town! Again though, I’m not a big fan of semi-arid climates. They get less than half the amount of precipitation that Bozeman does.

Very widespread. Blaine had at least 24", Downtown Seattle had 13.6", Downtown Portland had 16.5", Forest Grove had 27", and Albany had 18" that winter so it was a good one for the WV even without any major arctic airmasses. 19th century was cool like that.
