My wife said Billings reminded her of a larger Klamath Falls. Whenever she compares a place to Klamath it is not an endorsement.

Never been there, my wife went there a lot as a kid to see her step-grandparents and hated it...mostly the town but she wasn't too fond of the grand parents either.  They chain smoked around the grand kids (this was back in the 70's when 2nd hand smoke wasn't harmful to kids).  My mother in law doesn't really have anything nice to say about Billings either.

I occasionally threaten my wife with moving there just to get her riled up.  I occasionally like to take a walk on the wild side! 😁

Got up to 72 today, I got the lawn mowed but couldn't get the fertilizer down before the rain showed up.  .11" has fallen so far, and the temp has dropped to 58 degrees.  We have the windows and patio door open and it was fun listening to the rain during a brief downpour that passed through.

Some nice evening accas alongside some showers. Anthony on Twitter called it a “preview of tomorrow” and I agree completely

One con of midlevel convection… As they are often associated with temperature inversions, those inversions reflect airplane noise and create false thunder. Happens all the time, especially when living so close to SeaTac… -_-

The GFS is still outrageously cut-off with the NPAC trough next week. Not going verify anywhere close to reality with that.

It shows high 80s for the Willamette Valley 👀. I'm good with mid 70s.

I don’t know if anyone remembers the DGEX model back in the day, but the current GFS almost reminds me of that. 😂

Though at least the GFS’s silliness is predictable..DGEX was just an acid trip.

My impression of Billings is massive oil and gas refineries and it literally stinks.    And casinos in regular restaurants and gas stations.  Of course I think that is all of Montana... but always seems really odd to me.

Ya gotta get off the freeway.  Take Hwy 1 in Drummond down along the Flint Creek through Phillipsburg aka P-burg (neat little town, the Sweet Palace has the widest candy selection I have ever seen, as well as awesome fudge.)  I have helped run cattle up the canyon just north of P-Burg, and my wife's uncle owns grazing lands in the canyon.  P-Burg also has a really good brewery.  Lots of small/medium working ranches between Drummond and P-burg.

From there it goes up through Georgetown Lake and on to Anaconda and back to I-90...absolutely beautiful, though to be honest, I think it is better to start on 1 in Anaconda and get back on the freeway in Drummond.  Beautiful views coming over the ridge and down into the valley by P-Burg

200 from Bonner Junction (just east of Missoula) runs up to Great Falls, and while Great Falls is nothing to write home about, the drive on 200 makes it worth it.

I also like the drive east out of Great Falls on 87 to 89 to 86 which dumps you off in Bozeman via the Bridgers.

There is also a route from Garrison through Helena that spits you out in Three Forks.

93 down through the Bitteroot valley is supposed to be beautiful, though I have never driven it.  The Ranch for TV show Yellowstone is actually in that valley.

The Freeway (Montana Autobahn) has lost a little of its luster since they bumped the speed limit up to 80 in places.  I managed to get a few triple digits runs down before learning from a MSP family friend that a lot of troopers don't like the new speed limit, and will actually cite people for going 1 mph over.  I also NEVER saw a speed trap on I-90 prior to the 80 mph speed limit.  Along these lines, the little towns and hamlets and backroads are notorious speed traps.

I saw some nice looking clouds over the Coast Range today. I also hope to hear some thunder this weekend, I don't remember the last time I did.

Yeah and the massive oil refineries are a no go for me. There are some nice areas that you don’t see from I90 but I don’t think I could ever live there.

Whitehall is a super cute little town! Again though, I’m not a big fan of semi-arid climates. They get less than half the amount of precipitation that Bozeman does.

I'm fine with a semi-arid climate. I don't remember Whitehall. I'll have to look it up.

And to think January was the homecoming king in 1969.... so much promise.

You're probably right. Then he had his 10 year reunion in 1979. Before that he started exercising, lost some weight, and finished Alcoholics Anonymous. His resurgence was brief. Shortly thereafter he took a slide down the nearly vertical slope, and he has never recovered.😭😭

The forecast said it would hit 71F today, it did not.  It hit 63F but was noticeably muggy.  Overcast all day, no clear sunshine.  It started to sprinkle which became some random stray showers.  It is now cool, 57F. The sky was pretty much formless today except for defined clouds towards the mountains.

Rather dark, almost dreary.  It was never bright today.  Kind of odd lighting.

Billings is like black licorice. People love it or hate it. There's really no in between. I like sagebrush, prairie, and cactus. So it appeals to me.

Some great discussion here today. Was fun catching up.

Looks like PDX missed their first 80 by a degree. 79/58 spread there. 78/55 here with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Some very cool clouds this evening, especially to the west.

Many spots should have another shot at 80 tomorrow before it cools down moving into Friday.

80 sounds splendid. I'll cross my fingers.🤞

Scenery wise it is different from Bozeman or Missoula for sure but it's kind of its own flavor. There are plenty of badland features in and around Billings, and the mountains aren't that far away.

There are quite a few places like that across the West. For instance some people think the Great Basin Desert is ugly, some people think it is beautiful. I generally fall into the latter camp but it really depends on where in the Great Basin you are.

Can’t stay indoors 24/7. And AC costs money..unaffordable to keep the house under 75 all day (especially now).

We usually crank the AC at night to take advantage of the lack of solar radiation and to sleep better. But during the day we have to set it around 76 or 77 to avoid a gargantuan electric bill.

You know Phil, you could move to WA where electricity is the cheapest in the nation. Sure you'll get less cool thunderstorms and no Derechos, but we won't hit 90 for at least a few more weeks.

True, it's trash or treasure. I really like the front range climate. Cold fronts are snappy. You don't get that too much in the PNW.

Nothing beats warm like growing up in SoCal in the 90s and early 2000s. Even with it over 100 we still had to go outside and play.

I spent many a youth summer in Shafter. Typical days were 110, and my great grandparents had never heard of the concept of A/C in the 1990s.
