I was pretty stunned that it was only the 21st coolest May. All this talk of N/S gradients and such.

There's been an N/S gradient on departures... it's been farther south than usual though. Most of northern CA still managed a warmer and drier than average May (somehow). Anything under a million acres burned this year down there will be a win at this point.

Would be funny if it wasn't so true.

Overall. 2019 only burned 250k or so acres in CA. 2020 burned about 4 million (including 1 million acres of northern Coast Range in a single fire) and 2021 burned 2.5 million. The last two were the biggest recent fire seasons and it isn't even close.

Would be great if Oregon could burn under 500K acres. Prior to the past decade anything approaching 500K would be a massive fire season in Oregon, but we've skewed upward in a big way in the past decade. A fire season like 2004 would be incredible. I kept thinking that was a good season because of the fairly damp June, but it was probably capped more by the soaking stratiform rain event Central and Eastern Oregon got in early August and early onset of the rainy season.

It would be, and going by the weather this spring I am feeling pretty good about this season not being a bad one. More worried about CA because they somehow torch regardless of what the 850mb pattern is. It's comical at this point.

I was surprised how much of summer 2019 was free of smoke. Other than a couple days in late July it was a contrast to 2018.

Some blue sky here now.   Garden is doing great... the warmer weather and consistent rain is really garden friendly.    There has probably been meaningful sun on more days than usual in April and May because there has been no chance to lock in the marine layer which often happens in a quieter weather patterns.

But regardless of all that... statistically we are really due for a 5-7 day period with no rain out here.   That is becoming the most unusual aspect to this spring in this area at least.

1991 had a very chilly May and June but at the end of June it flipped to extremely nice. Summer basically lasted through mid October that year.

July, August, and September were very nice that year. We were so appreciative when it cleared up in early July. June was super gloomy that year.

Yeah 2019 was wonderfully smoke-free. There are plenty of breathtaking places down in your old area and in NE CA... but you basically can't even visit between July and October now because of the endless fires and smoke. Feel for those living there in the last two summers and especially those who suffered losses in the fires. From what I've heard basically just brown choked out skies all summer long.

Yeah, I'm hoping for a good thunderstorm at some point this summer. I don't remember the last one here, but I did see a nice one when I was near Coeur d'Alene and Spokane in August 2021.

You got lucky. Most are high based in the summer and have nothing but dry lightning. Thunderstorms are usually fire starters.

At the very least, huge westside fires are still very rare events and require a set of unlucky circumstances in order to happen. We very unfortunately saw that happen in September 2020, which was just a horrific month. But besides that, the Yacolt Burn, the 1936 Bandon Fire, and the Tillamook Burn, there really aren't any other enormous ones on record (post-1870 or so) if I'm not missing anything obvious. I am aware that there were huge fires in the mid-1800s before the fire suppression era however.

Apparently there was a fire in my area in the 1860s that reached almost a million acres. I’ve never been able to find much information about it though. The town of silverton was founded in 1853 so there was a small settler population here at the time.

The year was 1865 and it was the biggest wildfire in Oregon history in terms of area. However this was well before the fire suppression era. 1848, 1849, and 1853 had enormous fires in the Coast Range as well. The Coast Range must have been a very different place before widespread logging.

They reference lots of big fires down there.    Including 1987 and 2002 for example.    And of course going all the way back to the 1860s.   I am guessing there was a never a time when every summer was smoke free as Andrew claimed.    That would also mean that there were never any fires in BC and CA as well... since a smoke-free summer would have to really be smoke-free across western North America because smoke tends to drift.  😃

We usually have some kind of smoke every year. It's been worse in recent years, though. We're getting smoke from other places like Northern California and British Columbia. September 2020 would have been a nice month, but the ridiculous smoke settled in like an unwelcome houseguest.

On this date in 2011 we were embarking on a nice 4-day stretch with no rain and temps in the 70s here.    Have not had 4 dry days in a row since March.

Coming up a little later in 2011... there was no rain at all here from Jun 25-July 12 which is a span of 17 days.

I think everyone had smoke from the Labor Day wind/firestorm. That was actually one of the last times I had a gust up to 60mph. And that stuff rolled in fast, went from less than 50 AQI to over 300 instantly.

I didn't have blood red sky though, not like parts of Salem and east had.

The frequency of warm season +TNH over the last decade is unprecedented since at least the civil war, if not all of US history.

For context, that is analogous to this spring’s wet pattern recurring in 8 of the next 10 years. With the warmest springs still colder than any of the 2013-2021 springs.
