20 inches+ is pretty crazy! The PQR office seems to have recorded around 19 so it looks like this location did a bit better. Surprisingly I had a higher snow depth on the morning of 1/11/17, but that was because a bunch of snow was dumped all at once so there was no time to melt.

Depths varied in spots. Folks a couple miles from me would say they got 12-15" deep. So where I stood not much deeper than Jan 2004. But easily a December that won't repeat for another generation.

Yeah, definitely a crazy event! I hope to see something like that here. I'm not sure if Bethany is better for snow than Tanasbourne overall, but it looks like we had slightly more in Feb 2021 and Jan 2017.

What was January 2004 like? I've heard that it was a major icing event.

Bethany did good in that storm as I was there until June 2004. (Bethany Meadows Apts.)

7-8" depth and yes that event had more ice than 2008. I would give that storm a few more points for producing a literal blizzard one morning, on 1/7. Power was flickering on and off in 50+ winds, blowing snow.

Most of the 2008 snow was garden variety. After 2004, it wasn't until I moved to K-Falls when I had my next blizzard.

I was living in Portland then. It certainly was.

Basically, after a long string of wimpy, dissappointing winters comes a classic arctic blast followed by an overrunning event. Classic snow to ice scenario for Portland. What was noteworthy was how tenacious the cold air was after the transition to ice began. NWS initially was going for a transition to all rain within 24 hours of the snow becoming ice. Instead, the freezing conditions and ice accumulations lasted most of a week! PDX airport shut down and stayed that way for days.

With each new impulse of moisture, NOAA kept saying trust is, it will start melting this time. Eventually it did, but not before many areas had accumulated an inch or more of ice.

I was living in Goose Hollow at the base of the West Hills at the time. The hills lofted the gorge outflow high enough that the precip type stayed sleet at my location for far longer than it did in most spots. I got 6" of snow, 4" of sleet, and about 1/8" of glaze total.

Bethany seems to get really windy at times during storms, but 50 mph gusts! The snow totals seem similar to Feb 2014 here, but you definitely had way more ice and stronger winds in Jan 2004.

There was also a surprise snowstorm on January 2, 2004 in Portland. It all melted before the arctic blast and big overrunning event hit, but it did give me a surprise because I was flying back from seeing my parents for the holidays. The weather report from Portland was pretty routine and boring (albeit a little on the cool side) when I left Albuquerque. By the time my flight landed, everything was blanketed in snow!

4 inches of just sleet is crazy. I had a decent bit of sleet in Feb 2021 too, but not nearly that much.

The entire week after Winter Break in '04 was off to kids at the Beaverton School District. Same with the whole week before Break in Dec 2008. Same district, but different school.

The feeling I had hopping out of bed to watch the ticker tape on the television listing schools was pretty fun.

It just kept sleeting and sleeting and sleeting. The total depth of accumulated stuff sat at 6" throughout. Sleet is a lot heavier than snow, so the accumulating sleet just crushed and compacted the snow beneath.

Note this was all very localized due to terrain influences. Get away from the hills and precip type shifted to freezing rain and amounts were not so much.

2016/2017 had also cancelled a lot of school in the BSD, I think there were like 9 days off or something total.

That winter may have had more closure days then, but I assume they were scattered throughout and not back to back.

January 1. It had snowed a few inches New Year's Eve morning, partially melted, and then New Year's morning we woke up to massive wet snow flakes dumping 1-2" per hour. Picked up about 7" that day on a rainy forecast.

Your area always seem to get dumped on with snow!

That was a very widespread snowstorm. Most of the Willamette Valley and Portland metro had 4-8" on New Year's. Big relief for us following 6 pretty pathetic years for snow.

Looking at that stretch we're spoiled right now with the snow we have been getting in the past few years.

Oh yeah you're right: Maybe 5-7 inches in my area as well.

Thanks for the correction. I had the date down as the 2nd in my journal, and only used that date because of that (I actually remembered it as the 1st). Must have written about it the day after.

It was overcast for much of that flight. The plane broke through the overcast while circling over eastern Oregon… or so I thought. It had to be eastern Oregon, because the ground was blanketed in white. Then we passed over what was obviously the I-5/I-205 near Wilsonville. It was a big “Whoa!” moment.

High of 63 in Corvallis. Today feels quite lush outside with the moistness, SW'ly wind and leafed out trees. Tomorrow evening could be fun.

64 in North Bend right now... also feels lush and moist here today.

This has been a vegetation friendly week.

My arch enemy the hedge has loved it.

I noticed that our hedge of laurels has really taken off this week... going to be some trimming happening tomorrow.    If I neglect them for a couple months they get to the point where I need a ladder to maintain them and that is no fun.

Ours surrounds three sides of our lot. It’s a couple pretty full days to trim it, clean up, haul to the transfer station. I will probably hire someone this year. Getting to be a little much for my surgically repaired back.

We have a huge benefit here in being able to throw all of the yard waste and clippings into the woods.   Having to haul it away would triple the work.
