A strong to extreme atmospheric river in June is really crazy. Looks like it might stay to the north of us in Oregon though.

Yeah I mean it’s a seasonally wet system down there too but it looks like it’s really gonna nail western WA and BC the hardest.

And even then the GFS and Euro show multiple rain chances afterwards.

Chances are things will probably calm down in the second half of the month based on climo but we will see. I personally think it’d be amazing to see that 1860s analog repeat itself but it seems unlikely. Could definitely understand some not wanting to see that 😂

I’m pretty sure 2011 didn’t feature this type of June weather either. It’s pretty crazy it’s staying this wet…it quite literally is like that year from the 1860s Jim brought up with crazy rainfall totals in June and July.

I would like to see the daily details from that year.    I wonder if it was really wet and cold in April and May as well.     May 1993 was actually quite nice before all of the June and July rain.    Its just hard to imagine it will keep going.

According to the PRISM data July 1993 is the coolest on record here with a monthly mean of 57.1. I believe 1983 was the wettest.

During the warm season, maxima were normally about 7 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than KSEA at my place on Bainbridge, but this difference could vary between 0 and about 12 °F. West of Highway 305 was significantly more affected by marine influences and was cooler yet on warm afternoons.

Yeah, up here about half a mile from the water it's almost uniformly 9-10 degrees cooler than KSEA at least on the warmest days. On a standard marine layer day that might shrink to -7 or -8 degree difference, but basically if KSEA is cracking 80F I'll be somewhere in the low 70s.

You can even see this in the heat wave from last year where KSEA topped out at 108F and I peaked at 96F.

Interestingly, the following April in 1857 had 0.29". With 0.83" in May. So like today the climate then could be very feast or famine.

If this pattern continues though that will probably start to drop as we get towards the end of the month. Fox 12's 7-day looked a little warm to me today, but what do I know?

Was there a volcanic eruption in the mid 1850s?

Just curious if the rain in June and July came from some big events or spread out through the month.

I count 12 days with measurable rain in June at Fort Steilacoom and 5 in July. Though the distribution of <0.1" days from 1856 is very small, so I have to wonder if they just tabulated things in multi-day bunches from time to time.

The July 1856 rain event predominantly came between July 21-23. Fort Steilacoom measured 5.6" over that 3 day period. Fort Vancouver had a lot less but still managed 1.75" on the 21st, so obviously a historically significant midsummer event.

Do they have temperature data?   Must have been a warm, humid rain to get those totals.

I am now down a wikipedia rabbit hole about Fort Steilacoom and the Puget Sound War of 1855-56.   Fascinating stuff.

It looked quite sultry, probably an AR type pattern. Fort Steilacoom's temp spreads were 64/59, 71/58, and 67/61  for those three days. Fort Vancouver was 66/63, 73/64, and 71/57.

My blueberry bushes love all the rain.  Tons of berries this year and they are nice and full and probably the biggest berries I've have in many years.  Raspberries are the same.  Loaded with fruit.  Tomatoes on the other hand are not so good.  Had lots of flowers the last few weeks but the fruit is not setting.  Lots of bees in the yard and can only think it's all the soaking rain and lack of warmth.

Good news is lots more rain is on the way.

Yay trees!

I feel like even if the rain stopped completely and temps climbed above average and it stayed that way until the start of meteorological fall on Sept. 1st we are going to feel robbed of a spring/summer season this year.

Already feels too late.

It will be nice to have warm, sunny weather this year but man, when it finally starts it's going to be over fast.

That's too bad.

I'm not the biggest warm weather fan but I want the summer lovers to have their fun.

That looks great!  You should look into the vegogarden containers.  They are really nice and similar to what you have but there is no pressure treated wood involved.  That stuff is like poison and can leach into your fruits and veggies.  Plus, over time wood just doesn't last around here.

Your garden area looks amazing and I bet you have fun harvesting and eating fresh fruits and veggies.

We do bring in brand new dirt every year... so that probably helps a little.
