June 2022 - Summer Begins

I have a feeling we will see some somewhat insane heat in Western Washington within the next 4 weeks, maybe oppressive somewhat, definitely not satanic like last June, oppressive for a few days I welcome with open arms, not Devil Went Down to Georgia hot again, that was a bit much.

Why do you feel that way?  I hope you are wrong completely about the "insane heat" part.

Technical analysis post here...

The 18Z GFS continues to look much more reasonable in terms of weather conditions for the weekend.   Apparently the difference is that the GFS has been closing off a little ULL just to our southeast which results in weak NE flow.    The ECMWF and ICON show more of an open trough to the east by Sunday which creates onshore flow that is strong enough to lock in the clouds and drizzle but not strong enough to benefit from any downslope from the Olympics.     Minor detail but makes a huge difference in tangible weather in the Seattle area.

And of course the GFS will be wrong.  Because as Phil correctly says... the GFS sucks.

Gut feeling and seeing the heat going on in parts of the country right now,  could be wrong, I usually am.

My PWS recorded a heat index of 124º last June 27th, but I think the humidity sensor was... befuddled.

Yeah those temp/humidity sensors have to swapped regularly and can run high.

I’ve artificially set my station’s dewpoint temp 2°F lower because I’m pretty sure it runs high. I’ve tried swapping sensors, using different types of sensors, etc, but I’m always running above stations around me. Some of that is probably due to siting (lots of thick, old forestland and creeks/bogland around here) but I don’t think that explains all of it.

Green filter is in full force again! Good to see.

Seriously?   You think that pic was modified?   I assure you it was not and why would I need to make anything look more green here?    🤔

The greens look sort of yellowish to me in that pic.

36 holes at Gold Mountain on Monday, preceded by 18 at McCormick Woods on Father's Day.

Hope it's dry. Cool is fine. Either way, ibuprofen will be the drug of choice.

Ibuprofen is a necessity for all golf bags, next to some booze and maybe a good ball or two.

I only hit 103 last year, let’s aim for 105 this time! Then a marine crash into the 50’s!

Both Alaska and Hawaii have all time records of 100 F.

Alaska and Hawaii probably have very simple explanations as to why 100 are their respective all time records.

I just like to think that in Hawaii, they don't have a large enough area of land to support major heatwaves, even though their climate is very warm. I think many islands have similar heat records. They have climate consistency to brag about. Alaska has only barely reached 100F due to them being so far north on the world map. I imagine Russia doesn't often see 100 either.

Though with Phoenix having never matched Portland's 116, that one intrigues me more so.

Southern Russia can actually get pretty toasty in the summer. The Lower Volga valley / Caspian lowland is actually a desert and some places have some pretty hot averages, like Astrakhan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astrakhan#Climate and even Volgograd https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volgograd#Climate

(I also just learned that the Volga River Delta is below sea level.)

Yeah, apparently 122 is their all time. :P

I was initially trying to show there are cities that see 100 not-so-rarely but 110's are harder territory.

Not quite, but actually southern Oregon is a great comparison to what I was getting at. They easily get hotter summers than PDX.

Yeah, but those locations are both further south than us here in northern Washington. On the other hand, how about Verkhoyansk? Located at 67º North the average winter high is -43F, but in 2019 it was the first location north of the arctic circle on record to get above 100F.

Monday may very well end up a chilly day too given a well (or ill) timed weak upper level trough swinging through. Potentially four straight days in the 50s from Friday through Monday, in late June. Smothering the weekend completely! Absolutely an improvement over 110 degree heat.
