Nice squall line. Got some outflow winds (I estimate 50-55 on our street), fire/police sirens followed when the downpour and thunder started. The lightning is not as frequent as the MCS event on 6/13 but not bad!

We still have power but would not surprise me if this took out a few streets outside the immediate downtown parts of Ashland.

Temps outdid themselves.

Sitting at 105 at 5 pm.
Sun fells like sitting next to a open oven door.  Even the birds are panting.  Most have hauled it to the lake a quarter mile away.
And yes, there are golfers out in this heat. 🤪

The ring of fire appears to have skipped right over me.  Northern Iowa got it yesterday, now it's southern Iowa's turn tonight.  A few spots in sw Iowa could get several inches.

Get ready for a nasty 2nd half of July. 😶

Now coming into focus on the EPS (and other guidance) as convection looks to re-emerge over the IO/E-Hem.

Praying for a/c not to fail.

The water was so hot in the bird bath I’ve started filling it with ice cubes.  At least their water will be cool.  The lizards are grateful as well.

Cell just popped up overhead, dropped a quick 0.7” and departed. A few rumbles of thunder and 20mph winds accompanied the downpour.

After this, in conjunction with the 4”+ on 7/2, it’s safe to say water concerns have been alleviated for the time being. We’ll see how long it lasts.

Currently 75°F with fog.

Yeah I mean I leave town on the 31st anyway, so if I have to deal with 10 days of oppressive heat I’ll deal with it.

Unlike out there in the Plains, it has been a relatively tolerable summer so far here. Basically everywhere east of the Appalachians and north of the VA/NC border has avoided real summer heat thus far.

Looks like a PHX forecast....yikes!  On the flip side, you have the nasty humidity to deal with which can be unbearable.

The excessive heat warning expires tonight for my area as a weak front will push through.  Northern Missouri getting pounded with rain  with 2-6 inch amounts being reported around St. Joe.  Hoping some clouds from those storms may keep my temp down a few degrees.

Let the battles begin....the CFSv2 and JMA weeklies are pretty much lock steady with an overall cooler look for the Week 2 period...

2.png

Temp/Precip...wet & BN for the southern Tier...looks like from I-80 on south could be the general divide zone from the warmer pattern...

image.png

image.png

Week 3-4...

3.png

Temp/Precip...a relatively seasonal pattern overall for much of the CONUS

image.png

Very wet pattern sets up with is in agreement with the CFSv2...I really like where this could be heading as we get into August.  The Monsoon also looks to fire up again later in Week 2 for AZ and the 4 corners region.

Yesterday the official H/L at Grand Rapids was 78/64 officially there was 0.22” of rain fall (here at my house I only had 0.02”) and 27% of possible sunshine. The overnight low in MBY was 62. For today the average H/L remains at 83/62 the record high of 99 was set in 2012 and the record low of 45 was set in 1894. At the current time it is clear and 62 here in MBY while the official reading at GRR is 60.

It is a cool morning out there w temps in the 50s and w/ plentiful sunshine to work with. It gets cooler by the weekend w highs in the 70s and lows in the lower 50s. I would not be surprised, if some spots see some upper 40s for overnite low temps, especially, the far northern suburbs of Detroit.

102* Today.

Friday and Saturday will see 104-105.

More ahead the next week.

This is out of control down here.
Deadly heat.
I’m putting ice out in water for birds and other wild creatures.  The water is so hot they drink hot water or die.

This has to stop but when?
I’m praying my A/C won’t crash!

It’s nice of you to be taking care of your wildlife around the house.  Any little bit helps!  By the following weekend you’ll be seeing some relief, if not a bit earlier.

Shelf cloud in Prestonsburg, KY yesterday with the storm line. I have a bit less of a sky view from some streets around here. I'll try to get a good shot of the next shelf cloud whenever it happens.

Found this on a random facebook post on a page I don't even follow. Good thing I saved it, I was trying to relocate that post and can't find it.

Haha, actually don’t live in a very foggy area. In the summer it usually only develops after thunderstorm downpours.

Autumn is the foggiest time of year by far. Residual humidity in conjunction with longer nights does the trick.

Very brief "cool" down here for a couple days.  Brrrrr near 80.  Then the heat looks to come roaring back.

Yeah, late July and August look horrific in analog pools. Just a sea of warmth except for the West.

But I have hope that summer might “end” early, maybe a legit flip to cool weather in early/mid September? Hard to say, will depend on timing/amplitude of the MJO/GWO. But it’s possible.

Our Mets isn’t optimistic about weekend. But by Thursday we should top out at 98 for the 1st time in awhile.
Lizards will be thrilled!😎

The official H/L yesterday at Grand Rapids was 83/60 there was no rain and just 25% of possible sunshine. For the month of July there now has officially been 1.05” of rain fall for the year there has been 20.86” of rain/melted snow fall. The overnight low in MBY was 67. And at this time it is 68. The record high for today is 101 set in 1936 and the record low is 46 set in 1984. In looking ahead it looks like we will continue with rather typical summer weather with highs in mostly in the low 80’s with dry air in place the lows will fall into the cool 50’s for several nights. We will trend towards the dry side and that once again could become a issue.

I get a nice break in the heat this weekend with lower humidity and some cooler mornings.   Up and down with temperatures have been the theme this summer and I look for that to continue until the last part of the month when the heat takes over for awhile.

Man, it has been a very unlucky week at my house.  Everything continues to go around us.  This morning there is heavy rain all over, but the slow-moving cells are dancing around me, just by a mile or two in all directions.  The north and east sides of Cedar Rapids have received 1-2+", mostly in the last hour, while it's just light crap here, a few tenths worth.  For the week my total is up to about 1", but it could have been much more.
