My initial experiences with dentists were with old school dentists in rural small town Georgia.  I had to have some extractions then, and it was downright brutal, I had a lot of "PTSD" after that.  As a teenager I needed a filling, and it took 2-3 times as long as it needed to because I was so freaked out.  I had explained my experience, and they were really awesome about helping me get through it, and I have a much easier time with things since then.  Severa years ago I had a crown and root canal, and it sucked, but I was able to get through it without destroying the chair or biting the dentist's fingers off.

It's not a horror story, but when I had my wisdom teeth pulled I just went in and asked the dentist how much it would be if he just pulled them (They were not impacted). I had no insurance at the time. He said $200 each, so I told him to get to work. Took about 20-30 minutes and I was on my way. One was in pretty rough shape so it felt a lot better when he was done.

I went through a long period without going also.  Must be pretty common when you're in a certain age range.  At this point I have to go a couple of times a year to keep up on things.

I felt like that’s what they were doing to me when I went in years ago. They weren’t impacted or anything, they just wanted to take them out preventatively because x% of people need them out sooner or later anyway. Seemed like they just wanted to milk the insurance.

Wow!  The one I did without general anesthetic took an hour all by itself.

Tomorrow should end up well below 80.

Only local for me as well when the wisdom teeth came out (fun drugs came after) though they were bad enough that they probably should have knocked me out (still to this day I have never been under) I remember at one point the Dr.’s knee was next to my head on the chair as he needed leverage while trying to yank one of them out…The sounds and yanking were horrific.

Ouch. I got all four out early this year, and it would have saved me about $400 to go with local anesthetic...not worth it.

My sons both have a very mild bleeding disorder inherited from my wife.   My wife spent her whole life without even knowing she had it until it came up on a test before a surgery for my son.     Anyways... when they had their wisdom teeth pulled a few years ago they had to do it at Children's Hospital in Seattle because the dentist recommended having a specialized clotting medicine on hand just in case and do the surgery on both kids at the same time.    It went fine and they had to spend the night in the hospital also as a precaution recommended by the dentist.    About a week later we got a bill for $100,000 for this medicine which they did not even need.    And the worst part is that the insurance company said it was an elective surgery and would not cover it! 

Took a few months of fighting over that bill but in the end we did not have to pay it.
