Hmm, there's no way that that's accurate. Their 1980-present average is 16.

Ugh I meant the year-to-date average. My fault.

Tulsa and Bartlesville hit 113 in 2011 and had several other 110+ days. OKC ONLY hit 110 a couple times, but had an average July high of 102.5.

Yeah can’t imagine what this is going to do to soil moisture there. Will be much worse than what rainfall based drought indicators suggest.

Going into La Niña/+QBO is the worst case scenario for drought expansion there as well. Unless tropical activity saves the day, there’ll be a significant moisture deficit going into fall/winter, with little if any STJ during the winter. 😶

TX is a hellscape apocalypse.  might as well live in Phoenix

In Phoenix you can get summer relief or winter snow by driving just 2 hours north. Not the case in most of Texas. I’d imagine I-17 gets used a lot on weekends.

Lol. Don’t think even the dustbowl pulled that off in summer. Had some gnarly ones during the spring, though.

If this continues unabated, it’s set the stage for a stretch of nasty summers across the CONUS, though.

Closest we came up a dustbowl pattern was 2012, which was preceded by drought building in Texas/Southern Plains during previous years.

Luckily the Pacific Climate Shift in 2013 put a lid on that, but that appears to have reversed (or begun doing so).

Sounds like another spectacular rainy season for CA then as well.    We just keep winning.

70something/50something today. Nice day. Haven't looked at SLE, but given what we got to I'd guess they got mid-80s. Typical mid-July weather.

Looking at the models looks like pretty typical July weather coming up. Maybe some 90s down this way for a day or so early next week, but nothing to exciting.

Helena got hammered that day!  I took a drive with my folks about an hour after the storm hit and the dirt, gravel and various sized rocks were all over the streets.  I heard about an inch of rain fell in about 30 to 45 minutes.  Last Saturday we got a very similar storm 10 miles south of town "Clancy " where I live.  0.91" fell in a half an hour and the runoff was amazing!  Thankfully we live in the foothills so no flood damage but the driveway was a river.  Helena sees triple digits about roughly 3 to 4 times a year,  I live at 4500 feet which is a good bit higher than Helena and I have seen 99 degrees officially according to my Vantage Pro 2, but the other less expensive thermometers around the house show anywhere from 100 to 110 degrees while under the eves on the north side of the house lol.  Note the 2 good sized water collection ponds in the photos, the one in the right pic is right below the driveway and was overflowing big time,  the second lower pond in the middle pic is to catch the overflow from the upper one.  Unfortunately the lower one suffered severe erosion due to water pouring in from everywhere else, but I will patch it up and all will be good until the next storm!

I keep thinking about several of our acquaintances that moved to Texas over the winter and spring only because of politics and cost of living. Haven’t heard a word from them. My wife is nuts to think we would actually enjoy living there. Sounds like hell on earth and all of my work contacts that live there agree. Several are making plans for moving to the NW. Sure I like heat and sun in the summer but 70’s and 80’s with the occasional heatwave. Not months of 90’s and 100’s with humidity.

I mean some people are pretty simple and all they need is to be around like minded people and f*ck every now and then and they are good.

But yeah. I agree it sounds terrible. Even when I lived in Oklahoma I thought Texas was even worse.

But then it will be 70 degrees and sunny all of January and they will forget all about summer and be posting again about how great it is.   😀

Crazy to think it's been over a year since we last hit 115.

And almost a year since the last all time record high in the I-5 corridor (100 at BLI on 8/12).

That August heatwave had two days of 100+ and a 103 at PDX and SLE. Pretty impressive if the June one hadn't happened.

Much of Texas still gets semi-frequent arctic fronts in the winter.

Yeah I’ve seen some by what would be insane for the PNW changes in the weather there a couple times while there. North wind can sweep through and drop the temps like crazy. I usually am in the Austin/San Antonio area when I visit…One day it went from the mid 80s in the afternoon down to the upper 20s by midnight…only got to the mid 30s the next day. Then it was 65 the next day lol. That wasn’t even too crazy by their standards. Did also see some snow there a couple years ago as well but missed February 2021 of course.

Yup - they’re called “blue northers” because of the very dark skies that often accompany those fronts. They happen a couple times every year on average since there’s simply no mountain ranges going north from Texas pretty much all the way to Arctic Canada. The airmasses can just funnel down the Rockies. Note that there are places at sea level on the east coast of Mexico below the Tropic of Cancer that have recorded freezes. Even Veracruz at 19 degrees north got down to 32.4°F once. For comparison the record lows at Honolulu and Mumbai (same latitude) are 52 and 53 respectively.

I'm hoping we end up with a below average summer at PDX but I don't know if we can manage that since they're already at +1.6 for July. If we have a cool enough August then maybe it can cancel out the slightly warm June and July but I don't know.

At least in Kentucky the weather flip flops up and down. I can do much worse than this for summer even though we get the humidity too. Most of July has been 80's and there was even a 74 degree day on 7/9. Models hint at a late July heatwave possibly, but I think I'll miss the worst of it. It rains here and not just every once in a while, its hard to have a full dry week in the Ohio Valley.

The powergrid is a weird situation too. I had no idea what that was about until the media started reporting on rolling blackouts in Texas. I was like - "wasn't that only a California thing?" 🤓

83/53 day here. Some light morning clouds then more blazing sunshine.

This is decent summer weather. Would be nice to have more in the way of true marine layer days mixed in but that doesn’t seem to be in the cards for now. There are some signs pointing to a very big warm up late month.

They may get some crazy changes but usually in the cooler times of year.

That reminds me of the day before I went through Amarillo they were 80's, then it was like 45-50 and a bit of a wind chill the next day when I got a night stay (middle of November, you can probably find the day I stayed).

Texas just gets longer and more dreadful summers.

Looks like Texas and Eastern New Mexico are struggling the most with the lack of rainfall in that area. Lots of areas in the extreme/exceptional drought category. The eastern portion of Kansas is in good shape at least.

Mean temp this month is 64.5…-0.6 so far. Guessing it probably wont be a below average month but don’t think it’ll be a torchy one. Has been pretty good so far little rain a week ago and the temps have been pretty comfortable even on those warmer days earlier this week it was only 83 and 84 for highs.

It's been a nice mix of weather. Even if it averages warm, at least it will have been a result of some -8F anomalies being beaten out by +8F ones, instead of endless +3F to +5F days with no change.

And thankfully that stadium in Texas has a roof.
