I picked 17lbs of blueberries today. Goal was 30, but it got a little hot for the baby.

Looks like SLE had a little over 9" in January 1968, but they only had 1" in December. Not a lot of snowfall recorded at Silver Falls in December 1967, but snow depth peaked at 11" and it looks like there were several significant snow events. The park did measure 17.7" in January.

Yeah the problem last season was the vortex started off too weak too soon which actually inhibited wave activity fluxes and allowed it to strengthen uninhibited through midwinter.

I prefer to see a strong vortex in Oct/Nov then a wave attack in December. Usually bodes well.

We still managed something in December which was nice, but I hope we can finally get some arctic air south of Portland, the last region wide Arctic outbreak was December 2013, so it's been a while. Maybe the GEM forecast from Feb 2021 can come to reality this winter!

Is Lytton placed near the gates of hell or something?? Let's recap the last year or so of complete batshit weather insanity at that poor little town.

-June 2021, crushes all time Canadian temperature record by reaching an unfathomable 123F

-A day later a massive devastating fire rips through and destroys the heart of town

-Early Dec 2021, all time record rainfall, unprecedented atmospheric river. Highway nearby is completely washed out and Lytton is cut off from the coast. Rivers reach all time water levels and rockslides cause irreparable damage. Boulders fall by the wayside, threatening cars with instant death

-Late Dec 2021, coldest airmass in 54 years hits, risking thousands in the area to cold weather hazards not seen in decades, and halting repair efforts from both flooding and fire

-Spring 2022, coldest Spring in over a decade, delayed growing season. This is the 'mildest' event on this list

-July 2022, now another fire ripping through the heart of town

What in the actual hell?!?

That's cold! Coldest high in my location according to PRISM data while I've lived here is 25 in Feb 2014 (warmer than the 23 at PDX though).

Dec 1968 at my location according to a COOP station had a min max of 12 (14 at PDX)! And in 1888, Downtown Portland had a spread of 9/-2!

Incredible year for my raspberries, albeit very late.  The heat last year really caused them problems, and they were totally done long before this.

We took the kids berry picking yesterday.

Our raspberry bush is done till fall and we get to pick a few blueberries off the bushes everyday. It really has been a good year.

I would hate that.  I love our dry summers.

It doesn't really kill the mood like the west coast rain though. It's nearly always from thunderstorms.

Even on some of the days with morning convection, doesn't necessarily cap our potential warmth unlike in the PNW. I've seen some wet mornings transition to sunny and hot afternoons. It kind of worked like that in Klamath Falls but a little more of a pronounced switch out here. The rain doesn't cool us either, on a few of my storm days it never got below 70.

I'm hoping for something in November, Portland hasn't seen more than an inch of snow since 1985! November 2010 did bring a 30/18 day though

November can be a bit of a waste though unless we take advantage of deep Arctic advection. 1955, 1985, and 2010 all took advantage of that quite well, but the examples are few and far between. Plenty more examples of 35-40F duds than 25F droppings of the hammer.

Waiting just a month later takes advantage of minimized insolation and a much more potent Arctic. Don't necessarily need a core airmass from NWT, just solid northerly flow. (Plus, haha santa time snowwyyyy yayyyy!)

You might not mind rain in the summer if it was cold and snowy all winter though.   I never minded summer rain in Minnesota... it usually only lasts a short while and keeps everything green.   Even the days with rain were usually sunny.    Here... the dry weather in the summer is the only break we get in the rain.

Depending on the city, June can be the wettest month on average, and July another wet one but still be warmer than Portland.

Up in Minnesota I can imagine they don't see a lot of weather between snow when it gets cooler. Whereas it can also rain here in the winter. I had snow in Ashland but it doesn't last more than a few of days at a time, and then we get rain again. We're part of the mid-south so I also don't think we can get very prolonged cold spells.

And this is even more true for the Portland area. Need something really special like 1955, 1985. 2010 was pretty meh in Portland besides the couple of subfreezing highs.

November 2014 also had two brushes with arctic air didn't it? With the first one the coldest it got in Portland was a 44/27 day, and the second one had a 39/26 day. I see your point, nothing really came from it besides some freezing rain in the South Valley I think.
