December Observations and Discussions

 Last December was pretty mild. Believe many locations finished with +4 to +6 departures that month.

That is nothing compared to this month though. +3.4° departure last year. Most highs were between freezing and the 40s. This month has had a lot more 40s and 50s.

Down to +9.5° departure for this month now.

People are on edge here lately. If you don't like comments someone makes then just ignore it. Even if the same comments persist. It's a waste of energy.

Start a banter/complaint thread. Problem solved.

Started a thread for banter and complaints. Expend that energy over there.

This cold was a shocker to my system these last 2 days and this was only average temperatures. I could only imagine if it were below average. Anyways, warmer weather on the way back and it will stay for a time. December looks like a snowless month.

Saw a few squalls last night, but only made driving annoying. 2.5 more months to go and Spring is here folks. Unbelievable.

Even though it was cold today, I was outside for awhile. Took a walk down by the lake late today and captured these shots. In Racine County.

While there is snow in parts of Michigans UP. Munising is not one of them yet

http://www.exploremunising.com/web-cams/

and

http://www.jamadots.com/#!webcams/cw2a

Yesterday was the first below average day of this month so far. (not looking like we will have a whole lot more) So still on track for the warmest December on record here in GR. (and many other locations) Also still at only 0.6” of snow for the month so there is also a good chance that GR will be in the top 10 or higher for the least amount of December snow fall. In looking at just monthly mean temps there are several winters in the past that have been similar to the winter (so far) and they are 1982/83, 1931/32, 1923/24 and 1889/90. All of the above winters were warmer then average with low snow fall amounts. But they all did have colder snowier weather in March.

12z GFS is way more amped up and snowy for some with Wednesday's storm.

Huge changes compared to the 00z.

12z has it at 980mb with quite a bit of snow on the back side:

00z had it at 990mb with all rain:

Then the 12z also has a bunch of snow the 26th for the same areas it hammers on Wednesday (Iowa, Southern Minnesota, and Northern Wisconsin.)

12z gem

Thanks for posting the animation.

Wish that high to the north would hold it's ground and deflect it more ENE.

Even though we soared from 21*F up to 43 today, there was still a surprising amount to remnant snow and I saw a bunch of various sized ponds all ice covered. Gonna get another warm week, but these are sure signs of winter. Not a totally open winter at least. January holds some promise for more sustained conditions.

Might need to start a thread if there is better agreement on this system. Eastern Nebraska to the western UP looks to get hit.

Boy with the rain and temps in the low to mid 40’s it does not feel like late December in fact with the green grass and rain it looks more like March.  And in many years the grass does not turn green until April. Even in the UP there are areas with no snow on the ground and there may be several areas even there with a snowless Christmas this year
