January 2016 in the PNW

Eugene's done the best of anyone in the lowlands since January 2012, at least with regards to substantial snowstorms. They had 6"+ snowstorms in March 2012, December 2013, and February 2014. That's two more than anybody else.

Definitely. '13-'14 was probably the best winter they've had since '92-'93, not many winters have two seperate, major arctic blasts both accompanied by big snowstorms (and obviously December 2013 in particular had some incredible numbers).

LOL, anybody forecasting widespread accumulating snow based off of yesterday's model data would ultimately look pretty damned stupid 99.9% of the time. Yay for us if this turns out to be the 0.1%.

That's why they pay me the big bucks... :P

All joking aside, I saw it there as a possibility a couple days ago but this thing has definitely trended beyond even the hints of that.

Already down to 22º dp 9º here in the West Hills. Going to take some time to moisten up the lower levels before we see anything here.

Cold Season 2023/24:

Total snowfall: 26"

Highest daily snowfall: 5"

Deepest snow depth: 12"

Coldest daily high: -20ºF

Coldest daily low: -42ºF

Number of subzero days: 5

Later on in that day

Pretty solid looking band.

Looks a touch dry in Northern Snohomish Co. Hope this doesn't damage my Frostpack.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I think it's safe to say at this point pretty much everyone will at least start as snow.

Crazy... we were sure that was not possible.   Deep cold pool wins again!

Oregon now owns the biggest blown lead in college football bowl game history.

TCU played the whole game without their starting QB.   Oregon only had to do it for a half.

My area probably won't do great tomorrow. Not a good pattern for the foothills. Warming aloft will get to us first.

WRF doesn't bring in the precip to PDX until after 1PM. Soundings still don't look good enough for snow.

The warming aloft happens real fast on the WRF, not sure anyone gets much snow if the WRF verified.

So what? Your defense can't hold a 31-0 lead?

Says the guy that won't watch his own team tomorrow because they might get blown out. Even if you do watch tomorrow that comment alone makes me wonder why I bother to care about your football opinion.

My football opinion?    I just cheer for certain teams and against other teams like 90% of the male population in the US.     No real opinion.     Always nice to see the Ducks lose.  If I said that the Seahawks will win every game and are sooooo awesome and have no faults... then will you also agree that its always nice to see the Ducks lose?   Then is my 'football opinion' solid enough for you?

The WRF shows a crazy warm up at the 925mb level over the next 36 hours.

But I doubt the Gorge scours out at all during the precip... cold air is just too entrenched.

Near west Gresham I am down to 26.0 now already beat my low temp this morning of 26.4. East wind 30-40mph. This is crazy. I might be 21-23 by morning, then clouds move in capping any potential warmth... Way below freezing tomorrow. If I'm not mistaken we haven't had a real cold January like this since 2004... Yes?

There still doesn't seem to be any evidence that Portland will be getting snow, is there? I still think most places will see sleet and freezing rain while some cold pool areas get some snow to start.

I think most people probably start as snow. Probably rather gratuitous, though.

My preferences can beat up your preferences’ dad.

It will be nice to get a break from the cold wind and see my lawn again.    Good run but a change will be nice.

I suppose that there have been a few surprises in the past when it comes to models under doing the cold at the upper elevations.

I sure wish we had the tower temperatures working in times like this.
