January 2016 in the PNW

Up to 28 now, continued light rain, a thick glaze on everything, just saw some pictures of Scappoose, looks like a disaster! At this point I hope it gets above freezing but I don't see that happening here or in town until tomorrow afternoon in town and probably not at all here. The problem is up here all the roads are snow packed with ice over them, that should hinder the absorbency of radiation that black asphalt normally gets during the day. I may be stuck up here!

Euro continues to look really good for Seattle tomorrow morning.

Solid band of 0.25" plus of QPF between 4 AM and 10 AM. Lifts it all the way North of Everett after that.

Looks like a battle between the operationals and higher resolution models.

Reporting in.. Just got home from Seattle.. Basically nothing as far as falling snow from Seattle until I got to Hwy 410. Seems to be the snow line here. Snowing moderately all the way up 410 to my house. I have about a half inch or less on the ground. it is currently 35 degrees and very slushy..

We come from the land of the ice and snow.

Yes, I have two fairly accurate thermometers... One is 34 the other is 35... So it could be 34. Kids said it has been snowing off and on for a number of hours but never snowed very hard. It is kinda melting so accumulation is melting fairly quickly.

I was working at BP refinery most of last year. Started there on the 5th of Jan. I remember a lane or two NB I-5 right after BIA being closed due to standing water. Allot of areas in Ferndale & Blaine were flooded out. Bellingham RV park was nice and squishy as well. Did the flooding impact you? I ask because I remember seeing snow on top of allot of cars coming from the Cedarville area and I could not understand how the heck it was so dang warm and wet where I was, yet cars were rolling in with snow on them.

The area you are mentioning floods if you spill a big gulp.   ;)   In all seriousness though, that is all in the Nooksack River flood plain, and is probably less than 30-50 ft above sea level.  I don't remember that specific event, but you might have been seeing people coming down from the ski area with a nice thick layer of cascade concrete.  I live and work in the hills East of Bellingham, so I don't ever get impacted when it floods there.

I can't believe it. I spent most of Christmas break standing outside my door at night to see if any snowflakes were mixed in with the cold rain. The best I ever got was a snow/rain mix. Yesterday I headed back off to school in California and today it starts snowing. Just my luck. Enjoy it guys, I hope you get buried. :(

After hearing that some spots are seeing rain, I'm not sure you are missing much. Will see

Yeah, I saw that, but at least there was a little snow today, which was better than anything in the past two years. We'll have to see what next weekend brings.

Driving around the area I'm noticing that higher elevations are warmer than areas in lower elevations or lower topography, Kent and Auburn Valley are 29 and 30 degrees with very light snow falling and minor accumulation.

I am very surprised to hear that it is snowing in some valley locations. Thanks for the updates!

SNOWING pretty good here now at the moment. Heaviest it’s been all evening so far and we have a solid trace on everything. Snow is rather weird in form... Half snowflakes, half miniature snowballs! I can hear it hitting the roof, and anything tin outside.
