August 2022 PNW Observations and Discussion - 1956 Redux!1!!1!

Recommended Posts

Hottest temps in Bozeman since August 2018 with a high of 97F today (tied the daily record). Hit 93F here which is also my highest since 2018. Temps drop a bit tomorrow but still not enough for my liking.

Euro weeklies show normalcy is only a few short weeks away!👀

Yeah real heat becomes pretty difficult by the time you reach the second half of August here. Low temps really start to drop off the second half of this month with the longer nights as well. Just gotta get through the next couple of weeks!

Isn't Bozeman's earliest snowfall in mid-late August?

Tomorrow and Wednesday should have a decent push of marine layer clouds that will be slow to clear.   The ECMWF shows clearing in the early afternoon but it could linger longer with warm air aloft until Wednesday evening.

Unless we get a September 1988 repeat!

We kinda had a September 1988 redux just 2 years ago so I don’t think we’re due thankfully. I’m personally sensing an early end to summer this year. I just get the feeling that at some point in late august early September this summer will start behaving like a La Niña but we will see.

El Niño does contract the Hadley Cell, so maybe! Second year Niños are better for that, though.

Looks like your town got a major shoutout from a youtuber that won't stop exposing all the best places to live. (He mentioned Gold Bar in the top rural towns in Washington and I about had a stroke)

For the record, Briggs has NO IDEA what he is talking about.  He's full of himself and has a huge ego!  There are geography channels like mine and many others that give real experiences instead of just his often fake made up opinions!  Don't believe everything he says!

The geographical similarities are pretty striking too, particularly for the Willamette Valley.

One could reason that in a distant past, Redding and Portland weren't such distant climatological cousins during the warm season.

There’s some key differences between Portland and Redding topographically, though, like Justin alluded to. Redding has 6-8,000 foot mountains (Trinity Alps, etc) between it and the ocean and is almost entirely cut off from marine influence at the upper end of the Sacramento valley. This low elevation continental profile makes it one of the hottest climates on earth at 40N. Portland OTOH only has a 2-3,000 ft at best coast range to their west with plenty of lower gaps, as well as the entire lower Columbia River as a relatively easy conduit to marine air.

Completely agree, though I was mainly referring to PDX also being situated in a valley which tends to be mostly cut off from the ocean.

Taken literally, in a theoretically hotter climate where Portland is mainly a Redding-type transitional zone, one could imagine a setup similar to a smaller scale version of the Central Valley, where temperatures up and down the Willamette would be modulated by varying marine layer presence sourced from the Columbia River Delta, not to dissimilar to the role the San Francisco gap plays in the Central Valley.

Of course it would come with the occasional marine layer leakover one would not be accustomed to while living in the Central Valley, just as we have currently today with the Tidewater gap to the west of Eugene and Grand Ronde west of Salem. So it would not be a perfect match by any means.

GFS is showing a hot Monday and Tuesday next week.  Over a week away, but it shows 90s and a 100 for Portland.  Temps in Seattle metro range from 70s to the north, 80s in Seattle, to 90s in Tacoma south.  This would be short lived as temps cool for Portland back to the 80s after this.  Seattle would be in the 70s.2008923951_ScreenShot2022-08-01at10_11_05PM.thumb.png.baba817f33bb61bcf3b6f951aa47fda7.png1253861097_ScreenShot2022-08-01at10_13_57PM.thumb.png.6f5a4666c2a3d8c4bbf145688b67da3c.png

All the week, Western Washington has had moderate to unhealthy air quality building up along the Cascade Foothills.  I can happily say, thanks to the cooler air moving in, all the monitoring sites within the Puget Sound are showing clean air again!

The same cannot be said for Oregon...

Actually a pretty decent week in the works.  Even the warm biased GFS has enjoyable temps all week.  Still looks like some 40s in the offing for Thursday night with northerly flow, below normal 850s, clear skies, and northerly surface gradients.

Yeah! Now get him to delete the Gold Bar video! Seriously, can I not have people coming here from all over? My town is known for meth and decent coffee before getting to the pass. No one needs to know that it's paradise.

To think 11 years ago, a July with an average high of 81.0 (63.9 mean) occurred the first year I lived there. Those summers almost seem impossible yet it wasn't that long ago. 1993 even had an average high of 79.0.

The warming of the July and August averages in the NW has been nothing short of astonishing this century.

I was thinking the other day how odd the 1998 - 2001 Nina was.  The winters stunk to high heaven, but it produced the last truly cool summers we had.  At that time it never even crossed my mind what was about to happen to our summers.

1998-1999 wasn't that bad though, major arctic blast and a lot of mountain snow.
