It's just mind blowing how much warmer it is there.  The difference in number of 90+ days compared to SEA in recent years is insane.

Puget Sound?   Maybe?

My dad grew up in Bothell, but spent at least half his life in Eugene. His weather observations were that during the summer it's about 10 degrees warmer on average in Eugene. The winters are pretty much the same. His memorial service was at Chester Morse, which is beautiful. He's buried at a Bothell cemetery at the top of some hill. I found that his weather observations were mostly correct other than Seattle gets more snow.

Eugene is part of team PNW. Hopefully, the snow will arrive in a few months.

We are the upper part of a tributary of the Columbia. We’re the PNW.

Once you go over the Kalapuya Divide then you’re in the Umpqua Basin and transition to more of a standard southern Oregon climate with fewer trees, more grassland and eventually a borderline “high desert” climate around Medford and Ashland in the Rogue valley.

I've read that in terms of the Willamette Valley ending in Eugene, it's generally considered at the intersection of 29th and Willamette. Not that interesting, I know.

So basically the Amazon district just a bit south of campus?

Makes sense as it's a low-level bottleneck point between the Coburg Hills and the foothills of the Kalapuyas. There's then an open area that includes Cottage Grove and the Row River which becomes the Coast Fork Willamette around Creswell, Then there's Dexter, Lowell and Fall Creek which are all up the main fork of the Willamette, the two merge around Goshen, then there's Springfield and on up the McKenzie Valley, a tributary of the Willamette.

The Amazon Creek (slough) has it's own flood plain around there. It's not easy to distinguish from one another. But once you drive south on Willamette past 29th, you are out of the Willamette Valley.

Odds are looking great that thunderstorms will land on August 5th at my new place. Reason I single out that date?

K-Falls had storms on Aug 5th six times while I lived there since 2012. Two of them were severe, one of them with large hail.

2012*, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020*, 2021. Starred the severe ones. Note the 3 in a row '14-'16. Going by what folks are saying in that area, their last severe storm might have been on 8/5/2020. Gully washer too, nearly 2" rain fell towards OIT.

Definitely wouldn’t call Medford and Ashland high desert, they are fairly low and have relatively wet winters compared to places like Bend. Hot summer Mediterranean with pine/oak woodlands and a lot more broadleaf evergreens than most of Oregon down there.

The Rogue Valley is ironically more representative of a true Mediterranean climate than most of the lowland coastal PNW.

I think the technical distinction is that they are hot summer Mediterranean whereas we are just “warm”. The Koppen climate classification system leaves much to be desired in terms of nuance.

Seattle is very close to an Oceanic climate, Vancouver BC even more so. The only thing keeping the two cities in the Mediterranean classification is their near complete lack of precipitation during the summer. In recent years its current placement has only been validated further.

Some argue Seattle should be in an Oceanic classification, but I think Med fits well given that our dry summers are pronounced enough to have noticeable, reliable affects on plant and animal behavior outside of extreme outlier years. This was true even during the "cool and wet" summers of the 1950s. Juneau for instance rarely ever sees brown grass, stressed undergrowth, or early seeding from firs.

The low DPs aren’t really a good thing. Would be nice to avoid hot temps and low DPs the next few weeks.

In a way the high dew points last week were a blessing, didn’t dry everything out as much as a classic heatwave would. We had dew on the lawn every morning.
