August 2022 PNW Observations and Discussion - 1956 Redux!1!!1!

Recommended Posts

Got down to 54F here, and more surprisingly at KSEA too! Pretty interesting overperformance on low temps at the airport. Dense marine clouds never really reached the exact Seattle area. Should lead to warmer temps this afternoon, maybe by a few degrees, but in turn also helped things cool off way better at night than forecast.

That being said, there is *some* stratus overhead, but it's broken and only recently moved in. Wouldn't be too caught off guard if a cloud deck popped in for a few hours this morning, even after sunrise.

Color me surprised if the 85F+ heat doesn't last through the end of the week. The upcoming pattern looks like a somewhat cooler version of the pattern we just endured. Should be a healthy delay of the impending cooldown, even from now. Could be some thunder on that transition tho

Can't stress enough how much more enjoyable life is when it's not torching like mad. Not a bead of sweat on me at work and it's heavenly. No sticky, gross feeling. Life just gets an ambient downgrade during heatwaves.

The 12z GEM is definitely less eager than the gfs to bring that ULL inland.

It's a little chilly here in MN without the gloomy drizzle.   Brisk NW wind and partly cloudy and in the low 70s.   The kind of day you want to be in the sun to feel warm.

I think there is a decent chance we see some thundery weather early next week.

I can guarantee it!  How can I guarantee it do you ask?

Because I am headed out of town early Tuesday morning for the rest of the week, and given how hard I jones for a good thunderstorm, you can put money on there being a good one on Tuesday morning.  And KSEA will be ground zero so it can f*ck up my flights!

Another window will be next Sunday afternoon/evening when I am trying to get home.

Off topic, but I'm curious if anyone else around the PNW has a healthy population of cicadas. I live in an area that was an orchard 50+ years ago and there are many healthy trees. I can hear dozens, if not hundreds, of them buzzing whenever it's sunny and warm out. I know it's not like this in other areas.

We don’t have cicadas, but we have a profusion of crickets and grasshoppers this year.

This just made me realize I haven’t seen a single grasshopper this year. Although I think we’re just getting to the time of year when they start to show up here.

About normal here.  But I’ve heard a lot of complaints about them from the mainland.

They were pretty bad in the Harrison Lake area last weekend.

It's called clown range for a reason.

I had some of those on our first hotter days of the year (mid-late May), but mosquitos have strangely been absent here in the middle of summer. You'd think the Ohio Valley gets a lot. Maybe later in the season they come back?

After going over some footage again, I remembered why I have nothing of 8/5/2020 uploaded. Rain got into the speaker of my camera and there is muffled sound through most of it. So a few things made that kind of unworthy of using.

I've been hearing them for a few weeks at my house. Kinda nice since we don't have them in SoCal.
