But do have buzzing cicadas or not?

There was one type of cicada in Klamath Falls but it wasn't anything like the scissor grinders we have out here.

They weren't loud.

How are the Kentucky cicadas? I've been to the SE coast several times and they are insane during the summer. I'm guessing Kentucky is probably similar.

Sunsets are noisy for sure! If you think the cicadas are loud, wait till 9:30pm when the katydids bark until 5am.

I think the cicadas are cute, but I hear farmers in the midwest don't like them at all!

Off topic, but I'm curious if anyone else around the PNW has a healthy population of cicadas. I live in an area that was an orchard 50+ years ago and there are many healthy trees. I can hear dozens, if not hundreds, of them buzzing whenever it's sunny and warm out. I know it's not like this in other areas.

Lots of them over on the east side of town. And my temps have been mostly in line with the airport, sometimes a degree or so warmer. Once we start with the heat here it just doesn't go away until Sept.

The rapid warming in this area sucks.

Just think: in 20 years you will be able to count 100’s like you count 90’s today.

Been three years since the last truly epic thunderstorm outbreak. Could use another one for sure.

May 2020 had a nice elevated event towards the end of the month with a shelf cloud and everything, but ultimately the best stuff stayed east of the Crest.

Was that September 2019? That was amazing in my location at least, 1.85" of rain in an hour and a small tornado just a few miles away the previous day.

The last legitimate thunderstorm we had here besides 1 hit wonders was 10/13/2020. The last major event was 9/7/19…but some noteworthy mentions would also be 8/29/19, 9/12/19, 5/5/20, 5/31/20 and 9/16/21. None of those were on the scale of the 9/7/19 event but all of them were pretty fun still.

Yep the September 7th storm was probably one of the best I’ve ever seen. Hit during the huskies game. Was lightning all across the sky just to the east of here and lasted for 4 hours with near constant lightning.

9/7/19 was a beast. Fond memories of that storm. I've probably shared the story a million times just like Randy and his Nov 2006 surprise snow story.

Left work to watch it, huge CG's within a mile blasting all around me, many with near instant thunder. There were a few bolts close enough to briefly hear that "clicking" before the bang. @Phil has seen enough huge storms to know what I'm talking about. Those bolts were probably within a few blocks. Oh what I would do to see that again. :)

I know I’ve shared the story of how I noticed the storm coming in as a party was winding down, and how I raced it to a bus shelter, arriving at the shelter mere seconds before the deluge did.

Love that kind of stuff. I watched the first cells pop off west of Mt St Hellens on radar, then drift northward.

When new returns started showing over the Sound and the Oly-Tacoma corridor, I knew it was gonna storm. But when I saw those cells continuing to strengthen and organize, with 60dbz+ cores rapidly becoming widespread, I knew what we were witnessing that evening was going to be exceptional.

Were you here for the action in 2008?  Both July and August were incredible.  The July storm lasted for something like 16 hours, and while the one in August was short lived it was spectacular.

Looks like the Issaquah Alps kept the marine influence out of the I-90 corridor.    82 now in North Bend and 79 in Issaquah.  Early August perfection.

The GFS really laid a rotten egg today.  It was going for 83/55 while reality says 73/53.  Might go up a couple more degrees, but utter perfection no matter how you slice it.

That was the day I graduated from college at the ripe old age of 47, and we were finishing up dinner at Fogo de Chao in Bellevue when we noticed some flickers in the sky.  By the time we got outside it was going full blast.  I was "fully blasted" so I guess I was pretty entertaining to watch as I stood outside going nuts over the light show.   I heard the next day that Bellingham got an epic show as well.

Fascinating temperature gradient today.  72 in OLM while Portland is 85.  It's very apparent northern areas are being influenced by the trough digging down from BC while OR is still being influenced by the 4CH.

I mentioned this yesterday.   Yesterday and today were a typical set up for the GFS to fail because it assumes too much mixing.   The ECMWF laid a crapload of rotten eggs over the last week in the other direction.   Then you have days when the GFS goes way too cold and looks silly.   That will happen most of the winter.

Doesn't quite make sense because North Bend is farther north than OLM and it's in the low 80s there.   More of a west-east gradient.

I do remember 2008…but I was only 9 at the time so it’s hard to remember some of the storms back in the day. I remember another good one on 7/20/12 as well…and another good one when I was camping up in sequim in 2011 I think.
