August 2022 PNW Observations and Discussion - 1956 Redux!1!!1!

That was a really good write up. How was 2010-2011 in the PNW? It was one of the all time winters for much of California. I keep seeing that Analog come up for this winter as well.

Definitely a spread-the-wealth kind of year from a snowpack and precip standpoint. The PNW did well that year, with the mountains having a nice surplus largely on the basis of the crazy cold/wet Feb-May stretch.

Pretty boring here. Was better if you got like Salem north.

That was during the stretch where we had like 12” of snow over a 15-year span.

Since then we’ve had like 55” in 10 years.

Living in Canada means you have to leave the country to go to some place warm and/or tropical in the winter.    No such problem in the US.   👍

Having lived near (and on both sides of) an international border for the past several years, sometimes I forget that most people do not cross an international border on average at least once a month (excepting when the border was closed due to COVID).

I was always amazed at how many folks regularly came down from BC each weekend to shop and gas up at the Costco on the Guide Meridian.

Gasoline and dairy products are a lot less expensive south of the border. The difference is not so dramatic for most other items, but there are brands you can find in the States that you cannot find here. Check out the Trader Joe’s in Bellingham on a weekend sometime. (No TJ’s in Canada, so far it has not been worth the cost of complying with Canadian labeling requirements for TJ’s to expand north of the border.)

Bellingham’s two biggest industries are higher education and selling things to Canadians.

It's called clown range for a reason.

Oh yeah, I learned to avoid all of the stores on the north end of town on the weekends for that reason. Just a madhouse.

Hey everyone.  I usually post my wildfire update daily around 4-5pm, BUT today I will be very late.  I am working late so I am not sure what time I will get to it.  Hope everyone is having a nice day.  Much cooler today and overcast here in Everett so far all day. It is 69F here right now.    We topped out at 73F around 3pm than have gone done.

I used to live in Bellingham and when you lived there, you learned to know what times to go shopping and when not too.  Canadian's would flock certain stores at certain hours.  You also learned when Canadian's would use I-5 to go further south.  They were the cars usually going 10-20mph over the speed limit.

Funny thing is that actual scenario literally more or less happened on August 23-24, 1992. 30 years ago today! Cat 5 Hurricane Andrew landfalled in South Florida while Hurricane Lester moved into AZ as a tropical storm and the northern Rockies got slammed with a historic early season arctic front and snowstorm. All at the same time.

It has gotten a bit crazy lately.  Our neighborhood was pretty affordable in 2014.  We bought for 350k.  Most houses are going for 800-1000k now.  Our neighbours are asking 1.1 million.  If we were buying now, we would honestly be looking at a trailer park most likely.
