I studied abroad in Santiago for a quarter. Chile is an incredible country and I've thought about living there before although never actually made moves in that direction. Santiago as a city is kinda meh though.

Yes to Chile. It's a first world country and most developed nation in South America. I love their unique geography with the long South Pacific coastline and the huge Andes mountains to the east. They also have such a diverse climate. The ocean and mountains are not far away from each other. I could see myself living there in the future for like a year or so. They got great seafood due to its proximity to the Pacific.

SLE hit 92 today. They were forecast to be 94/60 and ended up with 92/55, not going to beat 2017 with this kind of weak sauce.

WILDFIRE UPDATE

After the majority of fire season was super tame for Washington and Idaho, but heck for Oregon, the tides have changed and Washington and Idaho keep seeing increases, while Oregon is dropping like a rock.  California has been a no show for fires this year, thankfully.

NEW Known Wildfires started today! 8/24/22

Washington - 22 (22 new fires today. The increases started little, but now they are getting bigger each and every day.  Not good.  Thankfully summer is winding down here soon and shorter days and cooler temps should all but end fire season from picking up in Washington.  Lightning caused several new fires in the North Cascade's.  There was a rash of new fires alongside roads in the South Sound around Joint-Base Lewis McChord and Olympia, which leads me to believe human started. We also have a fast moving grass fire that Washington State Patrol noticed SW of Clarkston, though it is thankfully not near anyone. There are now five large fires in the state, up one from yesterday due to this fast moving grass fire near Clarkston called the Blankenship Fire.  It has burned 200 acres. The total increases from 59 to 61.) Total: 61

Oregon - 12 (12 new fires in the state again today.  Some good news is the Cascade's are pretty bare in terms of wildfires right now.  Oregon Crews have done a fantastic job.  The closest fire to Portland is far away south in Eugene called the Mr Fire. The big story still is the rash of fires that started in the Blue and Wallowa Mountains due to lighting.  Most have been put out, but sadly two are now listed as large and fast moving.  They are known as Swamp Creek Fire and the Getting Road Fire.  Some positive news from fire crews is they expect to contain them both within the next 24hrs.  Hopefully in the next update I will have good news from those.  There are five large fires in the state, up one from yesterday.  One of the large fires from yesterday did get put out by crews.  The total number of fires is dropping like a rock from 57 to 40.) Total: 40

Idaho - 17 (17 new fires in the state today. Like Washington State, Idaho is headed in the wrong direction late in the season here with increasing fire totals every day for the past two weeks.  The cause for the majority of these fires are lightning caused and sometimes they aren't noticed the day of their igniting.  Almost all these fires are in the Bitterroot Mountain Range. Two new fast burning, large fires are in the state today.  They are the Rapid Creek Fire near Grangeville  and the Fort Hall Assist Fire.  Crew have jumped on the Fort Hall Fire, so expect that to be out within 24hrs.  There is also a small, but alarming fire really close to McCall that just was spotted today, crews have been dispatched. There are five large fires, a jump from the three of yesterday. The total number of fires grows from 68 to 77, the highest for Idaho so far this year.) Total: 77

California - 31 (31 new fires in the state of California. The majority of these fires were all started within the Los Angeles Metro and seem to be human started.  Most are along roadways and freeways. Fire season really seems to be winding down in California after a rather tame season overall.  It is very impressive.  There are four large fires in the state. The total increases from 51 to 63. ) Total: 63

British Columbia - 58 (58 new blazes in the past 24hrs.  Dozens of new fires in the southeast.  Crews continue to fight fires near Revelstoke. BC crews have had no luck all summer trying to stop the Keremos Creek Fire which is still burning despite it starting well over a month ago. Just as recently as yesterday, there were evacuation orders due to this fire.  The Keremos Creek Fire is still listed as "out of control." Another fire BC crews have yet to make a dent in is the Nohomin Creek Fire next to the burned out village of Lytton.  There has been little to no progress in containing this out of control fire still, nearly two months in. Yet another fire of not is the Briggs Creek Fire which stated on August 1st and is still burning out of control near Kaslo. Thankfully, most other large fives in the province are not threatening towns. There are five large fires in the province. The total amount of fires remains at 237.) Total: 237

Who Has had The Most Amount of Fires (Ranked by days in which they've had the most fires, only counting days we've kept track here.)

1. British Columbia - 31 days with the most wildfires

2. Oregon - 2 days with the most wildfires.

SMOKE UPDATE

Offshore winds are blowing smoke into Western Washington, but thankfully it is aloft.  Expect another day of glorious sunsets due to wildfire smoke from California and BC flowing into Washington.  The whole state should be good in terms of air quality as the smoke is high aloft.  The exception may be fore some hazy conditions in Wenatchee and the Okanogan Valley.

The same can be said for Oregon as smoke has blow west over the the state.  Offshore flow has allowed this smoke over the western part of the state.  Thankfully it is aloft and not effecting air quality. The exception will be the Rogue Valley having to deal with an isolated fire in the vicinity, and possibly hazy skies around Medford.

Smoke is pouring from the Bitterroot Range in Idaho, but remains trapped mostly in mountain valleys. The Long Valley may see smokey skies and moderate air quality over the course of the next few days.  The rest of the state is seeing smoke, but high in the atmosphere and not low to the ground.  Just expect hazy conditions throughout most of the state.

That can not be said for British Columbia.  Smokey conditions are effecting Prince George and the entirety of the Nechako Plateau. Smoke from BC's interior has made it's way through the Fraser River gap and is allowing for some low level smokey air from Hope to as far west as Gibsons.  The smoke is mainly at the edge of the mountains and isn't flowing south past Vancouver.  As long as there is offshore flow, you can expect these conditions to persist.

Heavy smoke persists in isolated areas of Northern California.  Offshore and northerly winds have pushed much of the smoke aloft and northward into Oregon.  Redding is seeing a break from smoke today and tomorrow. Some moderate quality air exists from Modesto towards Fresno. Conditions along the San Gabriel Mountains vary from good to moderate depending on wind speed and where the smoke and pollution is blowing.

Well yes, but if you go to Shanghai some days it's so smoggy that the visibility is barely one-half mile with no marine layer around.

Yet the alarmists think we can save the world by banning all meat consumption and gas powered caes in a single country than has much less of a carbon footprint than those commie countries that people like Lebron James say we need to follow the model of to be more equitable. Then they fly their private planes to the yearly climate saving conventions.

They produce a LOT more greenhouse gases than the US, so it kinda makes sense.

The greenhouse gases produced in China don't just sit in one place directly over China.   It encompasses the entire Earth.

After being #1 for years, the USA is still #2 — hardly an insignificant contributor. And don’t get me started on the elite and their private jets.

But really, that's irrelevant. All the emitted CO₂ goes into the air and mixes. China is not going to warm up any faster or slower, on average, than the rest of the Northern Hemisphere at similar latitudes. And some of the biggest losers are developing nations that have never been big emitters.

Tax the hell out of those jets and yachts and put it towards fighting climate change.  Lord knows they can afford it.

I’d imagine UHI plays some role in China too...

It certainly could, but that sort of additional warming is caused by the built environment, not greenhouse gases.

Yeah I am not trying to minimize background warming, all areas have clearly warmed, but local UHI effects can be tremendous.

Right, but the post that began this thread sounded like a claim that China was having such a bad heat wave because they were the #1 CO₂ emitter. To the extent that global warming is causing that heat wave, the cause is all the CO₂ emitted anywhere, not just China’s CO₂. There’s been some pretty awful droughts (some likely exacerbated by climate change) in African countries that emit very little CO₂.
