August 2022 PNW Observations and Discussion - 1956 Redux!1!!1!

Recommended Posts

Just got home, BRRRRRRRRR

63 feels slightly different than 105.
The sky was looking a little bumpy right before leaving Orondo this morning. Hit some sprinkles along the way with the largest brief shower happening as I was getting into Monroe.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Sort of strange to see a like from the guy who was allegedly up all night worrying last time the models showed temps that hot.

😀

Look who is concerned about reactions.

Well we are at least getting some decent surface warming starting now. Mostly clear skies and up to 76 degrees here.

Very little if any chance of surface-based storms west of the Cascades. It’s all about the elevated stuff tonight.

None of the hi-res models look particularly inspiring for tonight, unfortunately. Some more action along the Cascades through late this evening and then a decent chance at something just offshore or perhaps right along the SW WA coastline during the early morning Wednesday.

Yeah, it’s more the low resolution stuff that seems to be the most favorable, although that isn’t rare with these elevated setups. Hard to say at this point where exactly things will pop.

Might be the greatest under achieving day of all time!

I bet it still gets to 75-78 there. Looks like the sun should be coming out within the next hour as this clearing moves North.

3km NAM still shows a few pulse type convective showers further down in the valley late tonight with the best mid level instability well to the west of I-5. But anything more widespread or longer lived looks pretty unlikely at this point.

WILDFIRE UPDATE   (Lightning Made Oregon Burn Bad Edition!)

NEW Known Wildfires started today! 8/9/22

Washington - 5 (Five new fires sparked in WA, all on the western side of the Cascade crest.  The new Whitcomb Fire west of Paterson is fast expanding. Good news, of the 12 fires started yesterday, all but one have been put out. There are now four large fires in the state; Cow Canyon Fire, Vantage Highway Fire, Williams Lake Fire, and the Riparia Fire.  Total fires statewide remains at 23.) Total: 23

Oregon - 29 (Lightning has done great damage and stretching fire crews thin.  29 new fires started mostly due to lighting.... There are three large fires in the state; the Miller Road Fire, Cedar Creek Fire, and Windigo Fire. Not only did lighting cause mass damage throughout the Oregon Cascade's, it also caused at least 17 new fires along the California's northern border with Oregon which will likely grow and make more smoke. The total of fires has exploded from 31 to 54.  Oregon now has more fires than any other state/province in the region.) Total: 54

Idaho - 0 (No new fires in the state for the fourth straight day. Two major fires still exist, the Moose Fire and Woodtick Fire in remote locations within the Bitterroot Range. The total number of fires remains at 3. ) Total: 3

British Columbia - 8 (Eight new fires in the province. There are now eight large wildfires in BC. Some good progress in putting out fires in the past 24hrs. The total amount of fires in the province decreases from 55 to 49.) Total: 49

SMOKE UPDATE

Onshore windows are pushing smoke eastward again over the mountain range crest.  Because of this, air quality is degrading across Eastern Washington and Oregon.  Spokane and the Idaho panhandle are most effected with air quality dropping into the moderate range.  This smoke is from British Columbia and Northern California. Smoke will also bunch up along the Idaho-Wyoming border and cause moderate quality in valleys in the region.  Southwestern Montana may see air quality degrade before it gets better.

Air quality will worsen around Medford OR as several new fires have sparked.  Air quality is currently moderate to unhealthy.

Smoke that had blown westward into the Pacific will now be shifting eastward and drift aloft over Western Washington and Oregon, but should have no impacts.  This smoke is from northern California.

Smoke is within all the valleys of southeast BC and up into Kelowna. Smoke is drifting eastward and south.  Smoke into Calgary, Lethbridge, and into Idaho and Montana.  The further from the source, the higher aloft it is.

The fires from Northern California and British Columbia are currently the biggest smoke emitters on the North American continent.

Currently southeast of Wichita heading SE….

One hell of an anvil cloud, I think it is over Dallas but not sure, my connection is pretty slow.

Edit:  not sure what the deal is with the upside down pictures, saw other folks having this problem earlier….

Just a note, the Riparia fire is definitely out now.   I led a team of firefighters over there on the 5th and we returned on the 7th.

but thanks for this info, it’s great!

Very comfortable today, in the low 70s with filtered sun. My ideal kind of summer day.

Another epic fail for the GFS today.  Last night's 0z was going for 88 for SEA today.  The real shocker is even the ECMWF busted high.
