49 for a low. It's going to be crispish to warmish today.

Just put the jetski back in at the lake from being over in E Wa. Lovely morning it’s quickly turning into! Especially the 15min walk back to the park to get the truck and trailer from the house…Almost got warm walking up the big hill that always claims vehicles during winter storms! Ahhh memories of November 1985 and my Mom sliding sideways all the way down in her 1972 Chevy Impala…with the pealing vinyl top fluttering in arctic north breeze.

Yeah I was just going to get the jetski in, check the boat, then go home and do more tractor work…But…There might be a change of plans since it’s SOOO nice out!
Also all is right in the world again now that Jesse is back in the house catching up with loss downvoting time!! 🥰

It was a great road tip but the huge cell we went through caused someone on a motorcycle to put down his bike.  Not sure on the riders condition but a lot of cars stopped in the pouring rain to check on him.  The bike was a mangled mess.

We tried to out run the cell as it was heading north east at 35mph but when we hit Butte and headed West we knew we weren't gonna make it.  At least we didn't have the half inch sized hail the weather alert called for.

Up to 81 at my location now. Yesterday was quite nice. We went to Hells Gate in Lewiston and the high there was about 90 but at the river in the shade it felt more like 75-80 so it was perfect. We're due for another heat wave on the east side of the state but that's to be expected in August.

I sense some record breaking cold here this fall/winter. Summer has been very similar to 1936 and 1988 out here.

A highly amplified regime like we have been in always favors an above average shot at cold here during a Nina.  The Nina favors a GOA ridge placement of course.

WILDFIRE UPDATE

NEW Known Wildfires started today! 8/13/22

Washington - 3 (3 new fires in the state.  Firefighters have made impressive progress at taking out dozens of new fires.  There are five large fires in the state. The total drops from 49 fires to 42.) Total: 42

Oregon - 7 (7 new fires in the state. Crews are doing an amazing job at cleaning up fires. There are three large fires in the state. The total of fires drops from 52 to 49.) Total: 49

Idaho - 2 (2 new fires in the state.  The Ross Creek Fire near Pocatello has thankfully been put out.  This drops the total number of large fires from four to three. The total number fires grows from 16 to 19.) Total: 19

British Columbia - 108 (Yesterday say 74 new fires and today is even worse, 108 new fires. The number of large fires in the province increases drops from seven to six, that is about the only good news we have here. The total amount of fires in the province increases from 118 to 163, the highest so far this year.) Total: 163

Who Has had The Most Amount of Fires (Ranked by days in which they've had the most fires, only counting days we've kept track here.)

1. British Columbia - 19 days with the most wildfires

2. Oregon - 2 days with the most wildfires.

SMOKE UPDATE

Onshore winds have pushed all smoke east of the Cascade Crest.  Both Medford and Bend have a clean air day with minimal low level smoke. All populated areas east of the Cascade's have to deal with high level smoke, but thankfully not low level deteriorating air quality. Winds from Northern California are expected to shift south by Sunday further cleaning the air for the entire region.

Poor air quality still exists due to smoke in various BC valleys near wildfires.

Overall it’s been a very quiet fire season in BC thus far.  Total area burned is only around 10% of the 15 year average.   Fire season generally starts to wind down pretty soon in the northern 2/3rds of the province with longer nights bringing better recoveries. Both in temperature and humidity.

I was slightly bored and browsing through old newspaper articles and a lot of them have some really interesting information. For example this one from Feb 3rd 1950:
January 1950.pdf
Some interesting reports:
 - Unofficial temperature of -7 in Beaverton but "was against the side of the house and may not have been as low as the true temperature"
 - Unofficial temperature of -10 in Aloha
 - The east side of the tunnel into Portland was blocked
 - Drifts 4ft to 5ft in Cedar Mill

Abbotsford and Agassiz in the lower Fraser valley both had monthly means in the mid teens that month.  Pretty remarkable.

KSEA not torching extremely hard through nearly the first half of the month. Around a degree or so above the long term average, but nothing unbearable. That will change though.

Indeed.  Clearbrook which is basically Sumas had a monthly mean of 17.3.  They used to get a ridiculously cold January once or twice each decade, but that was the coldest one.

59 at PDX this morning!

Fourth sub-60 low in the last 30 days.(62.8 avg)

For a little historical perspective, the previous max/min record for a 30 day stretch was 62.1, also 7/16 through 8/14 in 1998.

Record should bloat a bit further with some mid 60’s stuff in a few days and a VERY chilly low of 55 back on 7/18 disappears from history.

Most places are atleast +2.0 right now SEA just has such a high average per 1991-2020 averages compared to everyone else. Takes significant torching to be well above average at SEA now.

The funny thing is this month hasn't seemed that bad.  Only 2 days of 85+ so far.  Looks like we have one more nasty round to get through, and then hopefully that will be it.
