90° Olympia Regional Airport (KOLM)/Tumwater I believe that's their 13th 90+ degree day. Not sure what's the record there.

13 would put them equal to 2009 but behind 1981 (14), 2018 (14), 1958 (15), 2015 (17) and 1967 (18)

One good thing about the ball sweating humidity levels around much of the region lately is that they tend to suppress the worst fire activity, even if rainfall remains minimal.

If we're going to continue torching until further notice then I'd like to do it with continued SSW flow more or less dominating. Could go either way still.

Maybe tonight if it stays clear over there!    Temps should plummet when the sun goes down.

It was really hot this morning.  77F at 11am, and very very muggy.  Overcast all morning, cleared up for an hour or two, but the clouds are rolling back in.  Won't even get close to the projected high of 84F today.  It is 79F right now.

Lol!  This was supposed to be the hottest day of the week too.  Won't even be as hot as yesterday here.

With all these clouds from the south moving up, we will definitely be getting wildfire smoke from California.  I will look into that in the next wildfire update later today.

WILDFIRE UPDATE (Smoke Should Be Short-Lived For Most)

NEW Known Wildfires started today! 8/18/22

Washington - 8 (8 Lightning has caused a flurry of new flames especially on the Olympic Peninsula.  It might be 24hrs before we know the full extent to the new lightning caused flames. A cluster of new fires started west of Shelton today.  Crews have been dispatched to them all (that I can tell) but there is moderate concern for their spread due to the dry condition. There are four large fires in the state, one less from yesterday. The total grows from 34 to 36.) Total: 36

Oregon - 3 (3 new fires in the state. Lightning has caused some issues just south of the border in California which will be discussed in the CA section, but the threat of more smoke and larger fires is a real concern along the border. There are three large fires in the state. Oregon has seen an impressive drop in fires this past week. The total increases by one to 35.) Total: 35

Idaho - 0 (No new fires in the state.  There are three large fires in the state, one down from yesterday. There still remains several uncontrolled burns deep in the Bitterroot Range with further potential to spread, including a large cluster just 22 miles from Fernwood. The total number fires remains at 26.) Total: 26

California - 30 (30 new fires in the state of California. Yesterday we mentioned the spreading of fires along the OR-CA border.  More lightning has sparked more fires in a dense region near already two large wildfires; the Yeti and Alexs Fire, and the McKinney Fire.  Another new, fast growing fire is the Oak Fire near Shasta Lake, it just started within the past 24hrs and is already nearing 20,000 acres. There are now five large fires in the state, one that was previously large has been put out, but because of the Oak Fire's massive growth, there still are five large fires. This year has been a very tame year for fires in California regardless.  The largest fire, the McKinney, has burned 60,000 acres. The total jumps up from 50 to 69... nice.) Total: 69

British Columbia - 17 (The smallest increase in new fires in the past week with only 17 new fires. Cooler weather for much of the province has helped firefighters as well as helped naturally suppress fire spread. There are six large fires in the province, one up from yesterday. The new fire is the Mount Docking Fire which is listed as out of control and located far from any town.  The closest notable town would be Invermere. The total amount of fires in the province drops slightly from 115 to 111.) Total: 111

Who Has had The Most Amount of Fires (Ranked by days in which they've had the most fires, only counting days we've kept track here.)

1. British Columbia - 24 days with the most wildfires

2. Oregon - 2 days with the most wildfires.

SMOKE UPDATE

Smoke from fires near Lake Wenatchee have crept their way over the Cascade crest and into the Seattle metro.  Seattle is seeing poor visibility in the foothills and it is likely with slight offshore flow, the metro will see more and more smoke creep in for the coming days. Valley's are seeing moderate air conditions, as well as much of the east side from Monroe to Redmond, to Bellevue.  Stagnant air conditions are certainly not helping.  Graphs are showing declining air quality and more smoke south of Seattle from Renton, Kent, to Tacoma.  The extent of smoke will fluctuate within the next 48hrs.  Models indicate smoke from California is penetrating Western Washington now as well, most is aloft, but some is mixing in to lower levels.  Air conditions in the North Sound from Lynnwood up to the border are still good with no advisories in effect.  Moderate air conditions from Canada have yet to effect Whatcom County. Western Washington should clean up by Friday as winds shift to onshore. Wenatchee and Leavenworth are in good to moderate air conditions.  Once winds shift, expect air quality to degrade. Wildfire smoke from BC and Idaho are effecting air quality and visibility throughout NE Washington, with all of Spokane and the CDA under moderate air quality.

Idaho is seeing mostly moderate air quality from the panhandle to the Treasure Valley. Smoke from Idaho fires has shifted to a more stagnant position over much of the state. Eastern Idaho is in the clear.

Smoke from California is blanketing Western Oregon today.  Medford and Klamath Falls are under advisories. Eugene is under currently blanketed in California wildfire smoke with unhealthy to moderate air throughout the metro. Portland metro is seeing moderate to unhealthy air depending on elevation.  Air quality is expected to degrade with no onshore winds.

BC's Lower mainland is seeing degrading air quality from Hope all the way to Vancouver city proper.  Expect conditions to vary from moderate too good.  The reason for this is smoke during the overnight hours pushing through the Fraser River Valley from fires in eastern BC.

Air quality is improving for much of California as winds have shifted northward.  N. California wildfire smoke has left much of the Bay Air and is headed north into Oregon. The inner valley from Sacramento to Fresno are still seeing moderate air quality with some leftover smoke.  Willow Creek is seeing hazardous air quality due to the town being surrounded by wildfires and a deep, heavy layer of smoke. This should fade away over time.  Southern California is in the green.

We sure lucked out with the clouds today.  Really knocked the edge off what could have been a scorcher....at least for many areas.  Nasty humidity though.
