February 2016 Observations and Discussion

After underperforming the models during the last warmup, Iowa easily overperformed today.  The Euro had about 60 here with only low 60s from central to sw Iowa.  Instead, we are 64(new record) while central to sw Iowa is in the low 70s.

I just got home from spotter training and, boy, is it nice.

What a warm late February day! I have a current temp here at my house of 62° and while a much cooler 54° is being reported at GRR that 54° none the less ties the record high for February 27th here in Grand Rapids last set in 1998. And the 11” of snow I had earlier in week is now all gone except for the snow piles.

Made it to 60 degrees before the clouds rolled in. Been a breezy day as well. Tomorrow 50 degrees and the next day may not crack 30 degrees.

Today was beautiful. A lot of snow melted as well which caused some minor flooding around my area. Topped out at 63F. Felt great!!

I guess the clam before the storm?! ;)

Great ice fishing pics Snowshoe. Your son looks happy with his catch.

You wouldn't catch me on the ice in 50s though! lol

Another record breaker here in PHX...88F....one more possible We'd (90F). Thankfully, a big pattern change next week and more storms start targeting there west/southwest which will usher in seasonal temps and rain with mtn snow!

Going to end up with about 7" on the nose for snowfall this month. Way lower than past February's.

What a horrible month of February here if you're a winter fan. We averaged 6.1 degrees above normal and after the Groundhog's Day blizzard which was a pretty big disappointment here anyway, we only had another inch of snow the whole month. To top it off it was windy as hell most of this month. We had 3 days with wind gusts over 50 mph, and another 4 days over 40 mph wind gusts. I ran some numbers and the peak wind gusts this month averaged nearly 31 mph! There were still plenty of cool days too so that wind made those days miserable.

February ended up being +1.4°. If those two 60° days wouldn't have occurred it would have ended up near normal.

The winter overall was +3.66°. January ended up being the coldest at -0.13°. December was +9.68°.
