February 2016 Observations and Discussion

Looks like NYC proper is going to come up with 2-4". Best radar returns are further east on LI where they are expecting 8-12". Boston expecting double digits - where they've been left out largely this winter.

Now, it looks like the Nebraska gang is getting another snow this morning.

Boston was definitely the winner. Did your hear about that "Crane" that broke in NYC. This happened due to strong winds. I believe there was one fatality and 3 injured.

The NAM has a robust band of snow with the cold front early on Monday morning. Wish it was coming through during the daylights hours, sometimes these bands can be impressive to watch.

Looking like a general 1-3", few 4" spots if your downwind of a lake. Niko looks to be the exception with 6"+ possible.

The sun is out and the temp is now at 32° so it looks to be a nice February day. It looks like with the expected cold shot next week the winds will be NNW most of the time so most of the lake effect will miss GR to the west and SW so that is where the snow will fall the most.  The big question is will the next week be the last cold week of the winter of 2015/16? Another question is how much snow will Grand Rapids end up with this winter? So far GR has only had 27.8” and in the last 30 years the lowest snow fall total here was 47.6” in 1986/87. That winter of 1986/87 was the last time GR failed to reach 50” or more I a winter. Could this winter be the next one? Right now at my house I have one half inch of snow on the ground.

Yeah I heard about that. It fell with winds around 25 mph. That's the third time that's happened in just over a year!

4km NAM has a meso low looking feature over Lake Michigan on Monday.  If it backs up some, could see a period of heavy around here.

It takes awhile to fall, but a nice coating of snow is on the way it looks like. Maybe 2"? Wouldn't be surprised if it over performs - NAM showing snow from 33-84 hours here.

Not too exciting, but it's all we got to look forward to for now.

High of 39° today. Was a pretty nice day, especially after the clouds broke up.

it’s a mild almost  March like morning out there today. And with only patches of snow left on the ground it even looks like March not to mention that the grass is still green yet! Here at my house I now have 40° with clouds and sun.

So far this February is running +6.7° above average and so far at GR and only 2.5” of snow this month. And our seasonal total is now at 27.8” With the cold that is expected next week that departure will fall and could even be wiped out. As for snow fall look for most of that to be to the west and south west of GR. My updated seasonal snow fall amount for GR has been updated from my original 57.3” amount down to 47.5” (a lot will depend on what happens this next week and just after that) I am just wondering if even that 47.5” might not still be too high.

Well everyone enjoy Super Bowl Sunday and have a nice day.

Like the LOT snowfall map. Matches up with the GGEM.

The snow is convective in nature, so someone lucky could pick up 4".

I don't know if anyone saw this - in Lake Geneva, WI 15 cars fell through the ice at winter fest yesterday.

http://fox6now.com/2016/02/06/breaking-several-cars-fall-through-ice-at-lake-genevas-winterfest/

Really stupid of them to park on ice that has been subject to up and down temperatures and rain the last few weeks.

So far February 2016 is now at +6.3° here at GRR. The only snow we have is the snow piles and there may be some in the deep woods. One other item here in February is that the grass is still green in town. With the colder weather that looks to be coming in this week with the wind direction more NNW most of the snow should be west and southwest of Grand Rapids. So by next week end we could be looking at temps in the low teens or single digits for highs and still have very little if any snow on the ground. We did however have a lot of frost this morning but now with cloudy skies the temp is now up to 36° here at my house.

The grass here has been really beaten up by the ice cover over the last 6 weeks. Very yellow and brown looking. Typical color for this time of winter.

Some models have been favoring eastern MI for advisory level snows.

Though many in Nebraska have had  great winters, mine still has yet to surpass the mediocre category. Yes, I'm aware everyone outside of my state (except Iowa) has ridden the winter struggle bus this year, yet I'm over it. I'm ready for severe weather, those potent March storm systems.

It's always a slow climb into spring here; except 2012. Spring is the shortest season here. Really only feels like it for about 6 weeks in between the cold and the June heat and humidity. Actually in the last few June's it's been on the cool side.

Just had a decent snow shower. Still no solid accumulation yet.

My location in Central Nebraska seems to have its worst weather from Feb.-April to even early May.  Usually our biggest snowstorms, blizzards, happen in Feb.-April.  Just had our February Blizzard and usually there is a storm lurking in the first several weeks of March during boys or girls state basketball tournament weekends.  Hope that is the case this year.  I also don't coach a spring sport but our track, soccer, golf, and tennis teams usually lose several matches, invites, etc. to cold and wet or snowy, but by the next meet it could be 80.  Love the change of seasons which can be dramatic on the Great Plains.

They are slow moving. Finally got some accumulation now. Those cameras were at 1/4 mile visibility easy.

Looks and feels like Winter again here in Chicago.  Woke up around 2:00am this morning to drive my Mom to the airport (she's heading back to AZ) and it was snowing pretty good.  The snow was very fine and powdery.  Prob picked up close to 1.5" since yesterday.

While some areas have gotten snow, here at my house? Well new meaning for a trace amount. That is what I have in my yard a trace in fact it looks more like frost then snow. And the temp here is now at 25°.  So bottom line is that while there will be areas that have a chance of a lot of snow there will also be areas that see very little in the way of snow in the next few days.

Looks like winter again here also.

1.4" here total so far. Snow showers predicted to fire up later on again.

Officially over the 2011-2012 winter snowfall tally.

The november storm should keep alot of futility records in check

Yeah it should. Even if light events are all that fall in the next 6 weeks, the tally should get close to normal - which is about 43".

I was only at 16.0" this time during that winter. Running at pace with the 09-10 winter, which turned out to be back loaded with snow.

we have been lucky.  There are plenty of futility records easily in play in other areas of the midwest.
