First visible satellite images show the blob of smoke over the Seattle area and the Cedar Creek fire pumping a huge smoke plume straight west over the Oregon coast in 2020 style.

Careless people is the most frustrating aspect.   I remember the most catastrophic fire in San Diego County history was started by a hunter with a campfire during a 70 mph Santa Ana wind event back in October 2003.     We were on edge for days and eventually had to evacuate... and it was dark enough to need headlights during the middle of the day.   We sold our house right after that firestorm.   We were at the end of a long, narrow road out in a rural area near Valley Center.   It was a 2-mile drive to get out to other roads.   One way in and one way out.   But almost 20 years later and that house is still there.

I lived in a one way in, one way out scenario in a box canyon deep in the Santa Cruz Mtns (Lompico/Felton area) never had to evacuate in the time there 2012-2017, but those large fires in the Santa Cruz/Big Basin area a few summers back burned up to the property according to the new owner.  such a scary situation.

Very smoky out this morning, and continuing to get thicker.  It was just the smell this morning, but as I look out the window now, the haze is really settling in....also this.....

Mt Baker is supposed  to be somewhere out there

It’s much more subtle up here, but I have a feeling that’s not going to last a whole lot longer.

Hottest week ever in July.

Hottest month ever in August.

Running +5 in September so far.

Longest dry streak of all-time almost in the bag.

00z and 6z GFS bone dry through the whole run.

Gorgeous summer, huh?

For PDX, sure, but not for most other long term stations in the area: downtown Portland, Hillsboro, McMinnville, Forest Grove, Battle Ground, Vernonia have all seen hotter months.

So is that small plume of smoke just SE of Mt. St. Helens a fire or just dust blowing off of the mountainside? I'd hope not the former because that area's gonna get hammered into tonight.

Do you mean SW? That’s the Kalama fire. Up by Kalama Horse Camp. It’s 4 acres and mostly under control, but that will definitely be tested later today and tomorrow.

62F with thick smoke. And we’re only just getting started. Winds should be coming over the Belknap Gap and down the McKenzie and Willamette rivers soon. 😔

Thank you! Glad to know they've at least got a handle on it though no doubt our fire crews have their work cut out for them the next few days.
