PDX reached 95 degrees on 9/27/2003. Seven and a half weeks later it SNOWED.

Just a bit of flooding up here in between there as well.   Wettest day ever at SEA just 24 days after that 95 at PDX.

If it turns on. 😅 Don’t see much to indicate a strong jet anytime soon.

Do you think this is one of those years though where when it does form, it's got some kick to it?

I don’t see anything that stands out as favoring a stronger than normal jet this winter. Of course every year has jet extensions/periods of stormy zonal flow, and this year will be no exception.

Huh. Ironically that's probably a good thing when -ENSO is controlling ridge placement more directly, in the midwinter. But a bad thing right now now while this weird summer pattern is holding a firm grip.

Tomorrow the normal high at KSEA dips below 70F. Actual high temperatures tomorrow may indeed follow suit. Then we warm for four days.

Record lows really tank over the next few days here too. 29F on the 23rd. And 25F on the 24th.  Almost unthinkable for it to get that cold this time of year.

…and it’s basically all back on the 0z. More in Lake Oswego, most of the northern cascades, and much of NW Oregon, less in NorCal, Willamette valley and around Puget Sound. Also more east of the cascades.

Those record lows are pretty astonishing actually.  They aren't anywhere near that here.  I have only seen it freeze once in September and that was 1983.  Maybe it did on two days that year.  Did those records happen in 1972?  That cold snap was a beast for so early.

The final 11 days of this GFS run show an average of 57.1 for SEA.  Definitely right on for early autumn.  Outlying areas would certainly haver chillier mins.

2003 was pretty incredible.  Late heatwave, MAJOR October flood, and then a late October / early November Arctic outbreak.  The cold was so sudden it turned the leaves black here.  The only time I've ever seen that.

Not surprised.  The 1920s had some pretty crazy stuff.  Looking at the old records 1928 had a lot of abnormal cold here in the autumn.  It seems that 1925 and 1926 had a lot of dry air cold snaps.

In the Ag Weather update today... they said the exact opposite.    All signs point to a lack of blocking and zonal flow later in October into November.

I should have clarified I think the pattern will initially be a reversal and then relax into more of a progressive pattern....best guess anyway.

Supposedly Clearbrook got down to 20F on September 25, 1908 while Centralia dropped to 24F. Another cold night was September 24, 1926 when Forks and Darrington dropped to 24F. More recently 9/27/72 looks like it was quite chilly with OIympia at 25F and Quillayute and Bellingham at 28F.
